Although i hate to do it, i've got another "help me decide" thread for all you FG-er's. This one is gonna be for my first GS airframe (50CC of course). I've come up with this list: 1. 3D Hobby Shop 87" Extra SHP 2. 3D Hobby Shop 89" AJ Slick 3. Extreme Flight Yak 54 (88") 4. Pilot R/C Extra 330 5. Pilot R/C Extra 260 6. Pilot R/C Yak 54 I've heard/been reading a lot about Pilot and hearing amazing things. I also like the fact of custom schemes. My only gripe is dealing with someone half a world away vs. dealing with someone with the US. (I dont have anything against tony or his company) I've seen the extreme flight planes in action at my field and they fly great from what i've seen. 3D hobby shop just has awesome planes also from what I hear/read. I'm totally stuck. All the airframes are around similar prices so thats not an issue. Im going to be powering it with a DL 55, unless I make some more $$ and then I'll pick up a DA. Most likely 7955's all around. Thanks guys!

Well, You've got them all covered! The real question is how do you like to fly? IMAC? Crazy 3D? That will help make the decision between YAKs, Extras, and the Slick a little more clear. You've got great choices, so it is time to put up the dart board and start the selection process. Best 2 out of 3, no wait 3 out of 5, no make that 5 out of 7, etc. As to ordering directly from Pilot to get a custom scheme, ask anybody that has done it, you won't be disappointed with it. If you want to get them from an American distributor, Troy Built Models has them in stock. Tell us more about your flying style and we'll try to help, but at some point your personal taste has to come into it as well. Buy what will make you want to go to the field and fly! MadDog Joe

You really can't go wrong with any of the planes you listed. We have a lot of great choices now. I'm partial to Extreme Flight planes myself. Chris is a great guy and he goes the extra mile with his planes and service. The 88" Extreme Flight Yak makes a great first gas plane. They're a very strong airframe. I helped a guy at my local flying field transition to gas with one. He loved it. He had been flying less than a year and he had no problems with it. It's a very capable plane and is very docile at slow speeds also. One of the best features for someone new into gas is the landing gear. The yak's landing gear is great. It flexes enough to absorb those not so perfect landings and it's sits tall enough that you have plenty of prop clearance when it flexes. The same guy pancaked it from about 10' and it just bent the gear and broke his prop. After we straightened the landing gear and put a new prop on it, he was in the air again.

Well, flying wise, Im just beginning to enter into the IMAC scene and Im learning the basic stuff. However, I like to slam the sticks every once in a while when im bored so im kinda a 50/50 guy when it comes to that. I feel like the yak would handle my quest for 3D but the Slick would be the overall best choice for everything i want? Again, this is where you's guyz experience comes in BTW, 200 posts!!!!!!

mike, if im correct, bumping up to a 35%er would require the following extra: 1) 100CC engine 2) 2-4 more servos 3) power distribution system 4) Large vehicle than i currently own to transport a plane that large its mostly the 4th on thats causing problems. a hitch and trailer for my ford ranger is kinda expensive. so 50CC airframe is where it is for now.

50cc's are cool too. Here is my 50cc plane. It's a blast to fly and tracks very good.

Not really.... 85cc instead of 100cc, same servos 1 per surface, and absolutely NO power expander needed, only need 1 rx, and a buddy has a dodge magnum and hauls 35%er allthe time, I use a sheet of plywood to strap my 40% yak to and slide it into the bed of my truck and strap it in. If budget is an issue, then a dl110 is not much more than a da 50. This is just my opinion, not saying its all you should do. But a 35% flies much better than any 50cc plane on the market.

EF Yak will be your best choice out of those. Is there a reason that you left the EF Extra 300 out of the list? I am working on mine now. I've been flying the 58" Extra for a long time, and planes just don't get better. Just my $0.02

Chief Aircraft also sells Pilot RC Yaks with different color schemes than TBM. I would go with the Pilot. And you can get Carbon Fiber tubes, tail wheel, and spinner for almost the same price. ( CF version price 679.00, shipping $90.) Light, great flying, and beautiful. It's basically a quick build. But all of these planes are top shelf. It really is great to have so many choices isn't it? ![]() Steve |
