Help! Stearman PT 17 from Balsa USA

Hi Gents,

this is my first post so a small intro of my self.
I am from Germany and fly most of the time aerobatic planes like CARF extras or the Modelpower Extra 330L which I build at present.

The next project I would like to aim on is the Stearman PT17 powered with a 215ccm Moki radial engine.
Balsa USA has a 30% kit which I can get here from a lokal dealer.
So far I could not read a lot of that kit and may be some of you guys have already experience with it.

I would be interested in the kit quality, is it CNC made? Do the parts fit or is it likely to have lots of work with correcting/reworking the parts? And finally how does that thing fly?

Sorry for having so much questions but I think here is the best place to get the answers.

Thanks a lot in advance for any help.

Cheers,
Wolfgang

hello Wolfgang, welcommen to flying giants.
i think i have seen info on this stearman here you man run a search. but from what i do know about balsa usa's kits they are top notch and very precise. one of thos emoki radials would make a plane like that truly amazing. Yep...I have had one of those...and probably the one plane I miss out of all of them. The 215 Radial is awesome to hear and look at. You will not be disappointed.

Welcome Wolfgang! I framed one about 7-8 years ago. Good fit. Good wood. The only one I flew had one of the Seidels on it. Slow and easy..... Like a big kite! Now about that German connection. Dad was stationed at Ramstein in the late 50's and we got to live there also. Mom is from Bamberg. I have an aunt from Nurnberg. Great times as a kid! Castles with brown bears that you got to throw raw eggs to and they'd catch them without even breaking them!

Hi again,

thanks for your reply, this is really helpfull information.
I live in Regensburg, about 100Km northeast from Munich, a nice place to live.

Well I think I go for the Balsa USA kit and will order it in the next one or two months.

Starting with the build will be some months later as the summer is now appraching and I use the time to go out to fly rather then being at home.

The engine will be probably the Moki 250 as the weight as well as the dimensions are same.
Even I dont need the additional power it gives the opportunity to use it for another plane like a waco or may be a Pitty Python later on as well.

Attached is a pic with the design I am going to apply on the PT 17.

Yours,
Wolfgang

Hey there Wolfgang.......

Great choice of a plane and engine combo.

I picked one up a couple of years ago and had it finished in the Red Baron Scheme.....let me know what you think.

Hi Bill,

looks absolutely great. I love the colour schemes which are not overloaded and yours looks brilliant. How long did it take to build the airplane? Do you have a flight video?

I absolutely love the engine view...wish I would have mine finished already but this will take another couple of months, hopefully next year I will have it ready.

Wolfgang

Little late.

Here is a video of one of the two existing here in Brazi. Both with Moki 215

Gengerwo,

Not to confuse you, but you might want to consider the Peter Barth Waco. I built his quarter scale version, but he makes a third scale version also. Very nice kit, well detailed, and flys great. Peter's company is located in Germany. Lots of support on RC Universe with the third scale version. This is a link to his website:

Also, this is a link to pictures of my Waco.
