hi everyone how r u. my name is adrian lewer aged 25 and i reside in melbourne, victoria, australia. i am a victorian model aeronautical ason, helicopter and fixed wing instructor and have been flying since i was about 3. i have owened and flown just about everything from foamies, old timers, d/f aircraft, turbine fixed wing, 30,60,90 and electric heli's. i also muck around with yachts, nitro cars and buggies,blimps... you name it if it had a radio control i had to have it ... i have been keen on large scale aircraft since my tjt powered kangaroo bit the dust last year and have been hunting around on another forum trying to get advice with no luck. i was talking to a friend of mine who i do not see reguraly and he directed me here. i am extreamly keen on the extra 260 with a da 150 but recently seen the hangar 9 ultimate and i have falen in love ... i will use the da 150 in this model as well.now that i have decided on my model i need to know if anyone has any advice for me (positive and constructive negative)... i would like to know the correct balance point, what thrust angles the motor and top/bottom wing should be to the horizontal stab. i feel that 0 deg on bottom, + 1 1/2 deg on top and +1 up thrust with about 2 deg right thrust would be my educated guess but i dont know if i am realy educated enough ..... also some proven control deflections would be nice.....i might be a pain in the arse on this forum with the asking questions bit but i want to get it right before i even fly it to minimize stuffing around after a maiden, i do realize i cant get it perfect to start off with but want it as close as close gets.... any info would be appreciated and if my post needs to be moved can someone help me with that. thank you adrian lewer

Hi ferret, First let me welcome you to the Giants!!! This site isn't only about giant scale, more about the Giant attitude, fly what you have, fly it hard and have a ball!!! That being said, we do have more than our share of giant scale experts on our site and I'm sure you will get some answers to your questions. My only experience with bipes has been with both wings set at zero, but my bipe was only a 30% Ultimate, 1 degree down thrust and 3 degrees of right. That was how my Goldberg 30% was set up. I'm going to move this thread to the "Giant scale airframes" forum to get some more exposure for you. Welcome to the Giants!!!

Ferret, welcome guy! First of all is Hangar 9 still making them? I'm not sure if they are. Secondly, they are really nice flying machines.I've flown a couple and they are reall sweet hearts. It is a big drink of water though! If noise is an issue, you can get a set of cans in it. Then there's the 6 inch Ultimate spinner,,, $ !!! Drop me a PM if you find one and I'll give you al the dimensions you need. Welcome to the Giants, mighty proud to have you!

No worries Ferret. You will be spoiled for life going to gassers! Take your time with break in and you'll probably never wear one out. Lubrication and temperatures= lifespan. I'm sure Howie will give you the manufacturer's recomended proceedure on that. You won't believe how little mess gets on a plane with a gasser after your time with nitro planes. Dust 'em off and there you are (almost!) Best piece of advice I can give you is DO NOT TRY TO SAVE MONEY ON SERVOS!! Buy the best. Jr/Futaba/Hitec what ever, only buy the very top of the line. You might have to skip lunch for a while to cover the extra money, but you will thank me. Go with dual batteries with dual switches. Single receiver/dual receiver/ power box your call. A million opinions there!! The plane flys light as a feather. Not sure about coupling as I've not looked at the program. I'm sure there is as biplanes just tend to need it. One thing you will really love is the rudder! Knife edge requires about 1/2 an inch! It will take a while for you to get used to that. Best way to go there is start out with low rate rudder about an inch either way of center. Fly knife edge and keep reducing the throw until it wil climb slightly at full deflection. Best way to get used to the plane and keep things smooth. You're going to love the plane!! Thanks for being here dude! |

hey ferret, here is another idea! go into 100cc first. i have through a lot of dollars spent, found that for a first gasser model, a 150cc sized aircraft is a very expensive venture. these planes require an engine which is more expensive, usually 4-8 more high dollar servos and a really decent power system. also the airframe itself is considerably more expensive. the 100cc sized planes today are usually dwarfed at the field by their bigger brothers and true, bigger definately flies better but if the 100cc plane "goes in" the mourning period is a lot less. ie i only use a razor blade with no warm bath. i am currently flying a xtreme composite 100cc edge and i find it flies as good as the 150cc sized machines. it would be close to being 1/2 to 2/3 the cost of a 150cc sized plane. at the end of the day it rolling harriers real nice and its a cinch to torque roll. when setup for imac it excels and feels rock solid. whatever choice you make, buy the best servos you can. metal gears the minimum. so ferret go with what your head and wallet tell you. have fun and at the end of the day, THATS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT.

hey ferret welcome to the giants. we have an aussie thread, giants down under where most us hang out. if this is going to be your first gasser and little johnny is going to help you fund it. you could try starting off with a second hand plane. have a look at www.scaleaeros.com.au aerowiz is right, although the thought of having a 40% plane does get one going. the price jump is pretty big. what club do you fly at? i know a few guys down there who fly large gassers and i'm sure they would be only too happy to you some advice. |
