Hey Guys: Man I love the internet...trading of knowledge...great stuff! I have a question. I have been experiementing with a design for just short of a year. To date, only powered with electrics. At this point, I have a 102" version of this design. I have only 13min of flight time on the frame and so far very pleased with the results. I have posted info on this in the Ohm My forum...thinking the way I did before I got into electrics about a year ago, I probably would have steered clear of looking at electrics. As we all know, who have used electric power systems, batteries are still VERY expensive, especially when you get up into the big stuff. I am thinking of building another of this large plane and putting a 100cc gas on it. Stats for the plane are: Span 102" Lenth 114" Weight (w/o electric motor and batteries) 18.5lbs 2677sq in wing area I am pretty sure 100cc is the right motor for this plane. At this point I could buy a gas engine or larger batteries for this project for nearly the same price...point is happy with the power of the e system I have...just batteries are mucho dinero! Are any of you flying large "profile" type airframes this large with success? Is 100cc the right power? You can view video of third flight here w/ pics MYST WAYS 19MB.wmv IMG_0618.jpg IMG_0597.jpg IMG_0609.jpg IMG_0608.jpg Do you think this project is plausible? Dorado |

A 100cc would be way too much for this bird, think zdz/3W 80 for insane vertical. A strong 50cc would yank it around as it is.

I agree. I have flown a 32+ airplane on a 100 and it was enough power. At 18.5pounds, it would be crazy. You could even get away with a DA50, and maybe even an 80. One thing you have to design around is the vibration. No virbation with the electric setup. Mucho vibration with any of the gassers, so I imagine you would have to build up the front end a little bit.

Just to clarify so we are on the same page. The airframe weighs 18.5#. The E-motor, Batts and ESC weigh an additional 6.5 to 7# (poss + or - a few oz). This makes the fly weight at 25#. Gotta have unlimited vertical for what this plane is designed to do. I, too, thought about 80cc as a possibility. The front end is all angled CF. The E folks thought the E motor I was using would "torque" off the front-end. The CF design is very solid...I think, could be wrong, it could handle the popping vibration of a gasser...could try. At 25# are we in agreement 80-100cc??? Thanks, Dorado |

in the 25 pound range, youd want to be in the 80-100cc range. I'd go with either the 3W 80 or the ZDZ Super 80 which is supposed to be the top in the 80cc class right now power-wise. I have the regular ZDZ 80 and its a stump puller, not to mention alot lighter than most of the 100s (other than the BME that is).

Doesnt BME make some kind of super lightweight engine...poss just came out? Weight, though traditional wisdom says stay light, my planes tend to be a bit heavy in the Butt...most ive used pull pull even on the stab to get weight up front...haaaattte puting dead lead weight to my planes...know what i mean? In other words, every ounce has to be producing something!!!!LOL. Dorado |

The Da 50 on a pipe might be a solid choice!

A 100cc would be blistering power on that baby, and mimic the kind of insane thrust you usually get from a strong electric setup. But an 80cc should be a good choice, and better balanced between power and weight. Hope to see some vids when you get it flying |
