Help! Is the 27% Extra 260 ARF a good start into giant scale?

hey,
I want to get into giant scale, and was wondering, if the 27% Extra 260 ARF from hangar 9 is a good idea? Please give me your insight and comments!! Thanks alot,
Nick

Why not take a look at a true 50 cc bird? Something with 84 to 87" span vs 78" on the H9 260. Wildhare has a new 50 cc Extra 300, Airwild has a nice looking Extra, Aviation Models has a Yak and a new 260, Aeroworks has a new 260. All will fly lighter than the H9 with gas.

I think its a great choice if you like that plane particularly. I however would go with a zdz 40RE on that plane and keep it light, will fly awesome. If you want something a tad bigger, there are a ton of good choices out there

Are those also pretty cheap(well nothing in this hobby is cheap) but compared to the hangar9?

I would have to agree with Aviti...my first gasser was a WH Edge and it was great for me to get into gas with. You can probably pick up a used WH plane fairly reasonable or pick one of the new 50cc planes that are coming out.

And to back up what they are saying about the 50cc wild hares

the new versions are pretty light reports of 9.3 out of the box, that is a dam lite plane almost as light as the hangar nine smallish extra 260

but if you already had the 260 your in a good spot just the next time go a smidge bigger with the wings to get a better wing loading

Nick, I had one of the Hanger 9 27% Extra 260s. I didn't have a chance to fly it long due to radio failure, however I liked the plane. It flew well. I did have a DA-50 on it. The only real problem I had was with the hardware that came with it. The bolts for the control linkage were to short and needed replaced. I have heard a lot of people had problems with the landing gear delaminating, My did but it was due to a hard landing (dead stick and came up short of the runway).

One thing to remember When moving to Giant scale and gassers, the price of the kit is only a small portion of the total price. On the 260, for example, you will spend more money on the servos than the kit. I figured that it cost me approx. $2200 not counting transmitter to build my 260. So when you think about it if you decide to go with a kit that is even $200 more it really makes a small difference in the overall price.

If you like the kit, go for it. The nice part about it, once you have everything to put it in the air, if you decide to go to something different. You will only be out the price of the kit.

What other questions do you have? What powerplant are you thinking of using? What is your budget for the bird?
