Default World Models Extra 160R

GUys, I just bought my first big plane, well big since Im used to 40's type. I purchased the World Models 160R PW style. Questions are, what is the best power plant, servos and tips from anyone that has built and flown one. Your help would be truly appreciated, I dont want to mess up, since this would be the nicest in my hangar. Thanks

Ok I just saw the WM website. It's an 80 inch. 3W 55 would pull that beast around very nicely. Just $535 on sale at Aircraft International.

I had one of those with a Zenoah G38 on it. Flew well but was way under powered. If you want to go gas I'd go for a MVVS 45, DA50. If you go glow the moki 180-210 would be good also.

I have the same model in the purple scheme and I love it. I have a Moki 2.10 with a Perry pump in it for power. It does not have unlimited vertical, but it is still very good. Plus I got it used for a very good price when the former owner needed the room in his shop

Im have never dealt with GAS engines before and really have clue in tuning them. Based on the 80 Inch WS, what would be the best 3D, reliable and wont require a rocket scientist to tune. Also servo setups, if anyone has any pics on their setups!! Plzzzzz. Thx

I thought the same thing about gas engines a few years back.. but in reality they are EASIER than Glow!

Think about it... how often do you tune your weedwacker?
I've run mine for 6 years and just slap gas into it!

The same applies for RC gas motors...
Once you tweek the needles a bit.. your done...
Charge , gas and fly....

And tuning is not a mystery.
there is a few threads on this site that if you read you will understand quickly!
I say go with GAS... Best choice I ever made!

Have the same plane with a DA 50 upfront. Came out at around 15 lbs which gives you a wing loading of around 29 oz/sft. Sounds heavy when you compare it to the average 72" glow machine but actually isn't at this size of machine due to the Reynold's no. I started out with a Moki 1.8 upfront - had to add 11 oz nose weight to balance and was marginal on power with a bolly 19x6 prop. Now the thing will dance with an MSC 23 x8 and balances just fine with a slimline pitts muffler. In the process of lightening up the machine I went to a single Hitec 5955 TG on the elevators using a dual pull pull system - not the greatest thing when you want redundancy. I am using a 5945 on the rudder (easily enough for knife edge loops) and a 625 each on the ailerons. If you are going to buy new servos then comparable karbonite gear stuff would be the way to go as I am not happy with the play these metal gears can develop. The Titanium Gears are doing great. Also lowered the tail by an inch and half but still needed to mix out the pitch tendency in knife edge so I would not bother with that. This was also my first gasser but once you go to gas, you will probably never look back. I have just upgraded to Li-ions and am adding a TME smoke pump as I got the smoke version for the Slimline pitts.

BTW, the balance indicated in the manual at 6.5 inches from the leading edge at the root will give you a touchy machine. Between 6 and 6.25 is a better place to begin with. Low rates should be very low on the elevators for normal flying. Other fliers at our field with the same machine have gone into harrier mode on approaches because the rate was too high when flaring out and the resultant unplanned pancake was not pretty.

If you have any questions, just shoot away. BTW this plane will do the most wicked inverted flat spin ever and is very responsive in transitioning out to any other 3d manouvre such as a rolling harrier - although I must admit that you have to be on your toes when in the 3d mode with this plane.

Regards,
Aamer

Default Re: World Models Extra 160R

So basically the best thing to put in forn tof this thing is a DA50 right?

Servos:
Ailerons: 625
Elevators: Dual of what?
Rudder: 5945

I will be buying new servos, I dont have a ton of money to put into the servos, but the best bang for the buck if anyone can tell me. Also, if you have any pics on the setup of the engine, gas tank and any hardware you guys recommend. Such as horns, etc. Dumb question, but here it goes, the root for the CG, is that the leading edge of the wing???
Also, Im using a 9303JR what receiver should I drop in there?

Sorry bout all the questions, but rookie big time here.
