Default Extra 260 QB and ZDZ Super 80

Has anyone put a ZDZ super 80 on the Extra 260 QB. I was wondering if this combo; airframe with super 80 and canister is practical. Does anyone have real world experience, results with this setup or equivalence?

Dan

Seeing how the 106 pulls it, I wouldn't go any lower than that. The new ZDZ Super 80, I'm sure has enough power to pull it around, but you lose the low end torque and throttle response of the 2 cylinder, as well as pull-out from the hover. The airplane comes in at around 28 pounds, so the ZDZ will be marginal. Go 3W 106

Dan,
I have a CHP 34% Extra w/ a 3W 80 CS that weighs 24.5 lbs- the 80 is a perfect fit for this one- stable as hell, hovers at less than 1/3 throttle and pulls plenty strong on up lines. I don't see why an 80 wouldn't work considering you will be saving 1-2 pounds vs a 100cc. Most guys seem to be coming out in the28.0- 28.5 pound range w/ the QB.

Vic is definitely right though- the 100cc's have better torque on the low end.

I'm running a QB with a DA-100 and it seems unbeatable. Everytime I run that engine it runs better. I just can't say enough good things about it. It's almost ready for real oil and a bigger prop too!! The airplane is absolutely fantastic also. I'm about to re-arrange some stuff also and get a little more of a forward CG to lock in IMAC a little better.

My 260 is 25.5 pounds with all the CF stuff, and the bare minimum of equipment, including only one rudder servo. It has the 110 in it and that engine is just about exactly the same weight as a ZDZ 80 with a pitts muffler. The ZDZ would work fine if you kept it at 25-25.5 pounds, but it will take an extra $200+ in CF items to get it there. If you are at sealevel, you don't need to trim that weight off if you were to go with a twin. A DA, Kroma, 3W, or BME will pull 27-29 pounds around just fine on stock mufflers, and if you go with one, it will actually only be a couple hundred more than going with the ZDZ, CF stuff, and a cannister.

Dan,

A DA 100 weighes 5.8 lbs. w/ the compact muffler probably about 6.3 lbs.

A ZDZ 80 weighes 4.3 lbs. w/ the full length pipe it weighs 5.3 lbs.

Price: DA 100 w/ stock compact muffler: $1,295.00

Price: ZDZ 80 w/ full length pipe: $920.00

Weight difference: 1 pound

Price difference: $375.00

Correct, but you'd be at 26+ pounds with the ZDZ if you did not go with the CF stuff and strictly monitor weight, which would be a bit much for the 80 to pull around with the same authority as a 100. Therefore, to get good performance out of this plane with a ZDZ, you'd need to lighten it up. That would take about $225 in CF stuff, which would drop about 3/4-1 pound. So it would really only be a $150 difference to go with the ZDZ and have similar performance to a 100cc class twin.
Oh, and while the pipe will add top-end power, it will reak havok on the midrange.

The Super 80 on full length pipe will equal or better the power of the DA though.

yea, but the hassle to adjust the pipe, extra work on installing the pipe, think about it heating up, etc.
Bodywerks - your absolutly right about spending about $225 on carbon fiber equiptment ans stuff. landing gear, tail wheel, spinner, etc. But again thats just my opinion and dont even have or seen that power plant, so im just saying my own opinion!

I thought all the AW QB planes were setup for either full pipe or can? Set the pipe per ZDZs recommendation and go!
