just had to say thanks, to Soarrich for the idea about useing the heavy Mylar for reeds.that stuff work great.the reeds must have been leaking worst than i thought.i got twice the amount of compression now with the new reeds. i hope that means a performance increase.the Mylar is about twice as thick as the factory reeds and much stiffer.

Reeds have nothing to do with better compression.

The best reeds are with stainless steel.

This is not entirely accurate, though I know what you mean and your intent is correct.

A 2 stroke engine has compression on both sides of the piston. Compression in the crankcase is called primary compression and the reeds most definitely do have a direct impact on this. Leaking reeds will cause the primary compression to be lower.

Compression in the cylinder is secondary compression. Primary compression is what drives the charge from the case into the cylinder. Higher primary compression will result in more power because the charge fills the cylinder more completely.

But Roger is correct, when you are sitting there with the engine turning it over by hand, the reed valve has absolutely no relationship to cylinder compression. You can take the reeds out alltogether and cylinder compression will not change.

Where does the mylar material come from??

I've heard of using the disc material from inside of a floppy storage disk......... Don't know how long it would last, but would be cheap and easy to replace!!

Dave, Not a good idea, as it is to thin. Only measures less than .005 Mylar can be purchased at a drafting supply store. You need .014

It's not so cheap if it tears off and gets lodged in something important. Do not experiment with internal stuff, it can easily ruin the engine.

It looks for all the world like you're getting some serious blow-by past the rings. Can't think where anything else hot would come from. Seems strange it would build up there though. Maybe some reed cage material??? Flashing??
