Rich, I fly my plane with the cowl on. That's how I measure usable thrust, with the cowl on. It doesn't matter what you get with the cowl off if you don't fly your plane that way. I'm familiar with PE's spread sheet. Problem is you had the Vess 23A listed in your tests as putting out 28 pounds of thrust at 7000rpm. Now show me your video of that plane doing that as you said you would. I really think you have something wrong in your process. I'm not trying to be an ass, just trying to sort out the discrepancy.

Default Re: THE NEW MT 57CC ENGINE

I've been following this thread interested in the MT57 to use on my first gas plane. This thread started off great, lots of information.... however the last several pages have been jacked up... its become an argument over scales, usage of scales, reed replacement material, proper ignition dissection... statement(s) by people/person with no 1rst hand experience about how the engine can't even run long enough to be broken in... etc. etc.

If you don't have 1rst hand knowledge/experience with the MT57 then don't post as if you do. Almost every negative statement about the MT57 has been made by someone who has NO firsthand experience with it! There's NOTHING wrong with corrections to seek out truth, but C'MON!

Are there any moderators out there that can/will keep this thread on the up & up? I thought this was a thread about the MT57 engine and not an adolescent urinating/knitpicking contest.

Can we get back on track with more info about the MT57?

I totally agree Paul. If you read back in the thread you will see where I stated twice that I didn't think Larry wanted this type of thing on his thread however, the only guy who owns two of these engines, and works for Larry, insisted. As for negative comments, I haven't really read anything negative about the engine. So far the only thing you could even slightly construe as a complaint would be Closetguy having to replace his reeds. I really don't see that as a negative statement about the engine. Perhaps when you get the engine you ordered you can provide the rest of us with some further numbers. All we're really trying to do is find out how well this engine runs and how long it will last. The exact same thing every other new engine goes through.

Where are all these negative posts and comments about the engine?

All I see are a couple people trying to get some answers... last I heard there wasn't anything there wasn't anything wrong with that.

The scale stuff is a PITA.. and honestly there won't be a right answer.. but if you have a Vess 23A turning at 7000 rpms on 2 engines I dont care what the scale says.. the thrust is going to be pretty darn close and so is the power of the engine.

I just don't understand why Ralph's lips are zipped (for the time since I have seen the guy on a forum hahah (sorry couldnt resist ) and the test pilot hasn't jumped in and shared some info.

As far as the banter between jr and I.. well that's all one sided. I am just asking questions like everyone else.

I'm still puzzled as well, WHERE ARE RALPH'S COMMENTS???????

He's had this engine plenty long enough to at least run a few benchmark tests..................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I got to run the 57 today but couldn't fly waaaay to windy. First of all I'm using a DA header 25mm drop to a MTW-TD-75 can. 32:1 oil. 87 octane. VERY QUITE almost to quite.. Engine started 3rd flip after choking. Idle is very good but I left it on the high side for break-in reasons. 1800rpm's. for 2 minutes. then went to half throttle for 1more minute. then to full throttle. At full, with only 3minutes of run time it tacked 6750 rpm's using a VESS 23A prop. Replaced the VESS with a XAOR 23/8 and recorded 6450 rpm's The 57 has less then 5 minutes run time so I do expect these numbers to go up. Throttle response is fantastic, as good as it gets!! I have no fish scale but I assure you this motor pulls hard almost hurt the back of my legs and will fly my 260 just fine. As for my tach it's been around for a long time so I trust it. I was just wondering because there was no sunshine today if that makes a difference with tach readings. Anyway I am very happy with this setup so far. I know some people won't like my readings but I'm telling it like it is. For me its a keeper!
AL.

Sounds like you got just what you wanted AJT!! Once that ring wears in you'll be golden! As far as the 260 is concerned, you'll find you're flying at half throttle and below most of the time.
I know tachs act up if it's too dark but cloudy days don't usually affect them.

Yes AL you are right It's just what I was hoping for. For the $$ ya just can't beat it. I forgot to mention that the motor ran VERY cool I could touch the jug as soon as the prop stopped so I know i was running on the rich side, but with NO burbble at top end. And it was cold out today so that may of helped. You are correct about half throttle the only time I go full, is on uplines.

I'm sure that by the time you change over to a synthetic mix the rpm will be way up. Closetguy said he got 7000 on a mejzlik 23X8 with a pipe so you know it's there.

No problem, today we had a nor'ester, and yesterday my stepson's girlfriend committed suicide after her 17 year old brother died in a car accident, so this was down the scale of must do's.

Yeah, that's way more important then anything happening on here. I spoke with a guy today that suggested I setup for thrust tests in the same manner you described so I may give it another shot this weekend sometime. He seemed to think I would get 30 pounds.
