I'm in the process of building this ARF and would like to get some input from others that have this plane. I'd like to know what mods and such that others have done to theirs and how they like/dislike this plane. I can see a couple of areas that I'm going to beef up a bit and a couple of mods here and there, but I'd sure like to hear first hand from others. I've done an exhaustive search on this plane here at FG and on other forums with limited success. There seems to be info on the 1/4 and 1/3 scale WM Cubs out there, but I'm uncertain of the similarities to the 1/5 scale. Any input would be helpful. Cheers! BH

I own the 1/3 Super Cub, my videos of it are in the gallery. My biggest beef about it was, the cheap screws in the kit. One time (if that) use screws, that just head strip, or down right break. The paint on the gear was easily rubbed off (never cured, lead based?). I went around and painted Gorilla glue on loose joints. Standard stuff for most middle of the road overseas ARF's. 1 good crash, and a rebuild later, and it is a fantastic plane now................... |

Bosshoss, Thanks for your input. I'm planning on reinforcing the 'cabin' and around the windshield. A little extra beefing on the firewall too. I've read some about your Cub while I was researching (sorry 'bout the crash). It looks like a fun plane for sure. From what I can gather about your power choice for your Cub, it's not lacking any power, LOL. I'm planning on a Saito 100 for mine. I guess that'll fly it, LOL. Cheers! BH

BH, It's been a while since this post started but I thought it might be worth a shot to ask you about the 1/5 World Models Cub that you were interested in back in January. I'm also having a hard time finding much of anything written about it before I buy one. I'm limited to a Saito 82 that I have to put in the nose so the plane can't be the 40 size and can't be the 1/4 size. So, 7 or 8 lbs is my limit. I really want the 1/5th Blue and White Clipped wing version but i am willing to find out about the non-clipped version as well. What have you wound up with and what would you recommend?? Thanks, root aka Bob G Last edited by root; 07-03-2008 at 04:52 AM. |

Root, I haven't finished this plane as of yet. It seems that it keeps getting pushed to the back burner for one reason or another. LOL. The Saito 82 should be a good choice for this plane. If I remember correctly, it is within the recommended range. I've got the Hangar 9 80" Pawnee with a Saito 82 that's in the 8 to 9lb. range and it flies very nice with this engine. I've also seen the Hanger 9 80" Cub with the 82, and it seems to be a good match as well. ( both of tese planes are listed as 40 size.)The World Models 1/5 Cub that I have has an 84" wing, so I'd think that it or the clipped wing version would do well also. I chose the Saito 100 for mine because I have one on hand and I plan on towing banners with it. I figured that the extra power would come in handy. However, with my set-up, I'm going to have to notch the firewall in order to use an inverted pitts style muffler. The 82 would probably be a better fit. With the holiday weekend and the lousey weather forecast, I' probably have all of the excuses that I need to get back to finishing this plane. I'll agree that there is very little info about the WM 1/5 Cub to be found, so I'll try to keep this thread going with my findings and progress. Please let me know what you decide on yours. Cheers! BH BTW, A freind of mine has the WM 1/4 clipped wing in the blue and white. He's not started building his yet, though.

BH, Thanks for the reply. Sorry to hear that you haven't finished the plane. Well, go for it this weekend. As for me, I went out and researched the price and availablity and Airborne models had it in stock but was the most expensive but I'm not gonna fret over $20 when I can have it a week earlier and don't have to travel to get it. 179 plus shipping to the Jersey Shore. This plane's specs are a good match for the Saito 82 in that it has just the right amount of power for it to be too fast at full throttle and put-put at 1/2 or a little below. The clipped wing will take a little of the tip stall tendency out of it's personality and be easier to land as well as take off if there's too much crosswind ... although I heard from fellow pilots that the non-dihedral is the main culprit of the stalling. Anyways, I did a search on youtube for 1/5 clipped wing cub and saw a Yellow one and a Blue one in a few videos and it got my juices flowing enough to say "i want it now"...so I went for it...the Blue Starburst pattern, that is. I have the right angle adapter for my 82 which use to be in a CG Chipmunk and it gives a few more optional ways to rig it in order for it to be hidden. I would recommend the right angle adapters for the Saito 100 but they have to be supported with a self rigged bracket or else they crack at the threads. I had 2 crack on me due to too much vibration. Do you have or can you show me some close-ups of the landing gear 'struts" I can't make out if the 1/5th from WM actually have springs that are functional or if there are any springs at all. You know the way the cubs have that inherent bungee cord -like set up? Thanks, Bob G p.s. Mines due to arrive in 10 days...... I hope I don't beat you in putting it together! |

Root, The landing gear does have a 'bungee' set-up, but not like you'd think. (see pic) It has some fake bungee covers attached to the LG, but they're not pictured in the manual. Depending on how much I like this plane, I may spring for a Wallace functional gear for it. I've got a 90* adapter for my 100, but I haven't found a suitable way to to make it work with a bracket. I guess I'll get to cutting for the pitts muffler or stick an 82 in mine. This has been the biggest reason I put it on the back burner. I'm also going to beef up the servo tray in mine. The factory set-up may be ok, but I'd rather add some peace of mind. However, I'm happy with the over-all quality of this ARF. It seems to be well constucted. At the rate that I've been going on this one, you may very well get yours flying before me, LOL. Cheers! BH

I've since seen some close-ups of the landing gear set up and I see what you mean. It's not a real scale like spring set up but does look like it will suffice the 7.5 lb. all up weight. I can't justify the added $100 for the Wallace set up when the plane costs 179 but I must say it looks pretty effective especially when you read their schpeel about how it works. A friend has the 1/4 scale Dave Patrick Cub and even that model (big $$ but very scale like accuracy-wise) had to have the springs replaced with stronger ones for it to really work as good as it looks. Thanks for the heads up about the servo tray. Are you going to beef up the layers of ply or just add some more epoxy/CA to the joints? I'm always cynical about the factory firewall gluing job when dealing with an Arf and add tri-stock and epoxy for piece of mind but the servo trays never really jump out as needing extra attention. What's the skinny on the engine mount? The instructions say there's already holes in the firewall for an inverted mounting of a OS engine. Does that mean the engine can get by with the valve covers exiting directly out of the bottom of the cowl? It would be nice not having to come out the sides for that 'clean' sort of look. |

Root, I'm making a beefier servo tray out of ply. When your model arrives, you'll see what I'm saying. I don't have a pic of the factory piece. Reinforcing the firewall is also something that I also do for added peace of mind. I didn't use the stock motor mount, so I had to plug holes and re-drill for the new mount. The stock set-up will allow you to invert the motor for a nice clean look. Also, as best as I could determine, the firewall has no right or down thrust built into it. You'll want to keep that in ming when the time comes. If I remember right, I added 3 degrees of right and 2 degrees of down thrust. I guess that I'll soon find out how that works on this one, LOL. Cheers! BH

A fellow club member had his at the field today but I didn't get to fly it cuz he had radio/battery problems. He did say that the plane needed some down elevator for it to fly level so the washers at the top of the engine mount will be on my list as well. The Dubro Cub wheels on his plane are really cool, like 2 donuts with treads and very flexible....I orderd a pair myself but the $20 wasn't expected....they are less weight than the Great Plane's pair (which is less$$ at 16 but they weigh 3.?? ounces apiece) Any progress since early last week for you?

Root, I haven't had a chance to work on my Cub this past week. Things have been hectic at work and it's taken away alot of my free time. That's the price of self employment, I guess. LOL I'm anxious to get back to finishing my Cub. I really don't have alot left to do to complete it. The biggest holdup seems to be the mods that I keep throwing in. The Dubro Cub wheels are nice. Well worth the extra $ in my opinion for the look and quality. I opted for a set of 5" Dubro tundra tires. I know it's not actually a 'bush plane', but they work well with my chosen scheme for my plane, and look way too cool. Well, at the very least, it's different. LOL. If all goes well here, I'll get some build time on sunday. The weather man says it'll be to lousey to fly. I'll keep you posted. Cheers!! BH ...........go fly something!

Got mine today after delivery / address problem ((THANK YOU GUYS AT AIRBORNE-MODELS FOR REMEDYING THE SITUATION) and this plane all that it's cracked up to be. Excellent packing Nicely covered with pre-installed non-CA - REAL hinges all the way around pre drilled holes for control horns AND wing bracing AND inverted engine mounts. MUCH precious time has been SAVED FELLOW OWNERS: ----NOT Mentioned in the directions or in the pictures-----YOU MUST 1) Cut away the covering in order to epoxy the Horizontal Stabilizer and 2) REMOVE the BLOCK of BALSA that was used for packing protection in order to insert BOTH Stabilizers. Watch out BountyHunter I'm about to catch up to ya and finish this by Saturday.......KNOCK on WOOD??!! If I don't run into any SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGS (inevitable murphy's law stuff) Off to ARF Land...... |
