Help! what engine for an edge 540

Hi I just bought me a edge 540 from Goldberg. The one I bought is the 25% which has a 77" wingspan. I was wondering what engine to buy for it. they say the biggest engine to use is a 40cc gasser. I was told to run a da50r in it. But I was wondering what you guys think. If anyone has one of these bird. Please tell me what you are running and how you like it. I will be doing Imac/3d with this plane.

Thanks for you help guys
Tom

I'd probably try a Saito 220. The plane will be too heavy with a gas engine and the Moki's take a long time to break in and lots of guys have to use pumps or regulators on them. I knew a guy with the Goldberg 77" Extra and it turned out like 18 lbs with a gasser. Deadsticked and lost it. Keep it light.

hyy guys thanks for responding. I really wanted this plane to be a gasser. But I will take in consideration the saito 220. I really dont want to wreck the plane by it being over weight. This would have been the first gasser that I am building. So its all new to me as far as the weight with gassers and stuff. I was wondering if I could go to a smaller engine in gas or would It be sluggish or should I just glow this plane and get a bigger plane for gas . Also on a gasser what else do I need other then the norm for glow planes. Thanks for you help guys.

well i would say stick with glow and strongly advise staying away from gas. an o.s 160 will prob. work perfect. you should have gotten a bigger plane for gas. even with a 40cc engine, that limits your option when you want to get a second plane!

MVVS45 MG !!!!!!

This is an awesome combo for planes around this size!

MY mates Matt and Nathan both have them in EF 74inch yak and Ultra RC 76 inch Giles!
Both models weight under 12lbs with this engine up front!
11.5lbs for the yak, and 10 1/4lbs for the giles!
Power is awesome !

This setup works !

the fuji is way to heavy. sell the edge and buy something a bit bigger! even used planes are fine

Hello, I think I am the one an earlier post refered to as having an 18+ lb Goldberg Edge with a DA 50. I now have the plane down to just under 17 lbs. and when I get diferent batteries it should be close to 16 lb. I considered other powerplants in an effort to further reduce weight. Useing only the specs. listed on Towers website and looking at 1.2 to 2.4 cu in 2 and 4 stroke engines I could not find any that would give a signifcant weight reduction and give the same amount of power and reliabilty. Not to mention the cost of another engine.
For example:
Super Tigre G-3250 3.2 hp 43 oz without a muffler,
OS 1.6 3.7 hp 32.8 0z plus 9.7 oz for a muffler,
OS FS 120 2.1 35.3oz without exhaust.
OS FT 300 4.0 hp 64.5 oz. without exhaust
The DA weighs 3.13 lbs with standoffs your exhaust system will add more. I used a Slimline Pitts style and that added 12 oz. DA states 5.0 hp. If I didn't have the DA AND knew if advance that this was going to be a very heavy plane I may have chose another engine. If you should decide on the DA and your Edge is the same as mine then you will need to get standoffs that are 1/4" shorter for the cowl to fit.
The Edge flys great for my type of flying, sport pattern. I used to say I had no interest in 3D, shuks did I say that before or after I ordered my Aeroworks 50cc Yak QB ??
