| Bad-ass Super Contributer! ![]() | Going gas is a lost cause if you are going to get a glow-size plane and shoehorn a 50cc gas engine into it, IMO. A good, light-flying TRUE 50cc gas plane will have a minimum of 82 inch span (preferrably 85+), a minimum of 1250 squares (preferably 1350+) and can be built to no more than 17 pounds. Sure, you can get a $300 glow size plane and stuff a DA 50 in it and end up at only 14-15 pounds and it will have killer hover pull-out, but its wingloading will be too high. In terms of cubic wingloading, you want a value of around 9 or less, and anything over 10 is just plain too heavy. For example, a H9 260 at an average weight of 14 pounds has a cubic loading factor of 10.7, while a true, lightweight 50cc plane, like the new Ultra Yak, will weigh about 15.5 pounds, but with 1400 squares, that's only a cubic loading factor of 8.2!!! Believe me, the Yak is going to be so much easier to fly and 3D, specifically because its wingloading is so low... I'm not saying the H9 260 is junk, but it needs to be 12 pounds to be a killer performing plane, IMO. |

| Bad-ass Super Contributer! ![]() | Completely depends on your cash situation. The bigger you go the better they fly (usually). Most of the the 3D guys like a 30% plane and of course larger is nicer. But if you have been flying smaller than 25% (72 inch) planes, anything that is 1200 square inches of wing area or larger with any kind of decent weight will be night and day difference. Nothing wrong with pausing on a 30% while you grow. You will love it. |
