Default Aresti hammerheads

Fellow Giants:

The tuning on my engine (JC Engines Area 51) is now quite close to just right. With that said, I can work on my flying instead of worrying about what the engine will do. Today, I was working on my hammerheads, IMAC style (I'm a pattern guy). Coming from my right to the left and at level flight and 1/2 throttle, I throttle up to 100%, wait about three seconds, pull up gently, get her vertical, 1/2 left roll so I am now looking at the canopy, ease off the throttle all the way to idle while feeding left rudder, she's coming down, 1/2 right roll, up elevator to get her straight. My issue is this: my plane won't go straight up without giving a little right rudder. Do I not have enough right thrust, or is this something I must deal with? I understand right rudder at take-off due to physics, but during vertical??? I have not modified the AeroWorks engine box, the only thing I have done is place one washer behind both left stand-offs to get more right thrust. It executes an acceptable knife-edge, I have to feed a little up elevator to keep her straight. Throttle is close to 100%. It seems to be smoother that way. Sorry for the novel...

Correct, more right thrust, it also sounds like you need a little up elevator to rudder mix to hold it straight in knife edge.

If you 1/2 roll to either direction on the upline, you are looking at the belly not the canopy! Also, as the next poster said, you need to mix a bit of appropriate elevator with the rudder. Another thing that you might try is to mix a bit of right rudder to the throttle so that on your upline you stay perfectly verticle!

What was I thinking...I meant 1/4 roll. I may not be reading the Aresti correctly either.

IMHO if your plane goes straight up at the start, you don't need more right thrust. All airplanes while slowing down, will drift left (should drift left). If you abruptly pull the power to idle, and the plane starts to pull left, that means you have left trim in it. That could mean you already have too much right thrust in it. Which while flying cruising speed causes you to need a little left rudder trim to go straight. I would do a test. Fly straight, level, away from you. Kill the throttle and observe. That will tell you if you have some rudder trim. Then you can adjust from there. If that's good, I will just deal with the right rudder.

I hope I understood what you were saying. If you pulled, wings level, and your plane tracks to the left, right thrust will be required. But, it won't track straight forever.

It will fly pretty straight and level. If its straight and level at about 50% throttle, then 100% throttle is applied, it will slightly climb. Come to think of it, it does pull to left near the top of the hammerhead, too. Question, should I trim the plane out with the linkage on the control surfaces so I can put the transmitter trim on zero? I have heard of people taking the time to do this.

I find if it's close, 5-10, you're ok. But if your trim is 15+, that can be fixed easily with the linkage. I will send you a pm with my number. Give me a call. I will pick your brain, because I am going to start flying pattern also.
