I've got a NIB Avistar that I am putting together for my son, I think I'll design it for this right from the beginning, bigger servos, tail dragger and bolt on wings, oh yeah, 50SX

Sounds good. They have a little bit of dihedral those avistars which helps when getting into hover for the plane nestles into it so you don’t need much rudder. You just need a large elevator boost from ailerons. On my classic I have 25mm rudder and elevator deflections each way but the ailerons come down 25mm as well with up elevator. Boosting the elevator with ailerons is far smarter than a larger elevator. What seems to happen if plane is leaning forward its moving forward and the wings are getting airflow, so aileron boosting becomes effective (also limits tip stall dihedral rocking at high alpha), but when in vertical hover they don’t work just elevator due to it only getting airflow from prop. This makes plane less sensitive when put in balance. This works for all 3D sport models ive helped people with as well. Also make sure you do most important thing and hang plane from prop nut and make sure prop is horizontal to get the up or down thrust correct with bit of right.. Some trainers may need down for wing being high up and heavy which will lean the plane back. The classic is dead zero no up or down, maybe because my batts are on floor of trainer. It’s all about vertical weight distribution and not torque rolling with a loaded elevator.

Oh yeh.. and one of these helps, best thing to happen for sport 3D in ages "Churns out 10% more horsepower than a .46 and fits in the same size mounting space" makes the verticle tail take off easy. http://www.osengines.com/engines/osmg0550.html

Only exception the YS 63-s I also use but just a little pricey and breakable for younger kids..http://www.ysperformance.com/html/63s.htm
