These guys have hit the nail square on the head when they say "practice". I believe that, after flying for many years, it's as much a muscle memory thing as it is a practice thing. Speaking from my own experience, the more you fly, the more you learn how your specific airplane (or any airplane...generally) will react in certain conditions...one of them being a basic torque roll. By practicing on the sim (or with a foamy), what your doing is teaching your thumb muscles and your brain muscle to work together...the more you practice, the better they will communicate with each other. Practice on the sim/foamy until it becomes second nature...i.e if you have to think about when to push/pull and what stick to push/pull, then you need to practice some more. When you can do it without thinking, then you are ready to bring your 40% down on the deck and have some real fun!!! You can read all the threads you want on how to do it, but they will never really help you learn like a sim/practice will.

I dropped out of the hobby in about '97, and did not get back into it until last year. Boy, things had changed! 3D flying did not exist (well, maybe at the TOC) back in the mid 90s.

When I started back recently, a couple of my old flying buddies were out at the field doing torque rolls. Heck, if they can do it, so can I. NOT. I just could not get the hang of it. I could hover, but could not torque roll.

My son kept bugging me to get a flight simulator, and we ended up with Reflex. This is a GREAT program to learn torque rolls. I slowed the simulation rate to about 1/2 speed, and also modified the Flip 3D model to weigh less than normal. This gave me time to think about the controls. I kept practicing and gradually sped up the simulation rate back to full speed, and pretty soon I was torque rolling my models. I started with a foamie (GP Fun-Force Zero) then worked up to bigger models.

My 12 year old son, that has only been flying for one year, has me completely beat, however. Check it out:

Ramz had a good point also. It is almost a "reflex", harrier rolls are also like this. If you have to stop and think, it's too late.

I am not a master a torque rolls but on thing that helps is being able to hover with the belly of the aircraft facing you. I found, at least to me, what made the torque roll difficult is when the belly of the airplane was facing me I had a tendancy to get thing reversed. Also, try to take it one step at a time. Try to complete one full roll and end it back in a stable hover. Once you get that looking great then go for two, etc.
Also, they are all totally right as well, things have to get to a point where you aren't thinking about what you have to do anymore. I still have to work on that for some a lot of manuevers that I can do successfully but just don't have enough time on the stick to perfect it.

The best thing I ever did was to get some foamies. I like learning things on the sim, getting it with the foamy and then the bigger planes. The reason I use foamies is they are very inexpensive and easy to repair or replace. This means I can learn low and close to myself without the so called "pucker factor" playing a big role.

Biggest thing is not inputing the wrong direction! The biggest thing I see guys do is input the wrong rudder as soon as the belly is facing them. As soon as you input the wrong direction, you ar pretty much done unless you have enough power and can catch yourself and correct it, correctly, in time.
To learn to input the right directions focus more on the tail of the plane when the belly is facing you, This way, when you notice the tail drifting right, your natural reaction will be to input left rudder and, guess what - it will be the right input! Same thing goes with elevator, if it is drifting away from you, pull it back by pulling back on the stick.
Granted, these are just learning tools to get you where you really need to be to be "at one" with you plane. To consistantly torqueroll for as long as you wish, you basically need to know what's going to happen before it happens and be ready to counteract it befor your plane goes off axis.
