Default Turbine jet crash in Taiwan

ok this is not my crash, but it's all over the news in Taiwan and I thought it's an interesting story to share...

On July 3, a turbine powered Rafael jet crashed into an apartment complex in Taiwan, resulted in a fire that caused evacuation of all residents. The crash started a fire in the 28th floor which destroyed a whole unit. Cause of crash is unknown, as the pilot is a seasoned veteran. As a result, the pilot was detained for possible public safety charges, and one of the last two flying field was immediately closed by the government.

Really stupid to fly jets that close to apartments. Just asking for trouble.

Well it's not really the pilots the fault that the flying club's site is near highrise apartments. When the field was built years ago, the area weren't as developed as now. As result of this crash, the city immediately ordered bulldozer to take out the runway, and designate the area as no-fly zone. It's unfortunate for all RC'ers in the area since this is one of the last two RC field in all of Taiwan's capital Taipei.

The pilot has agreed to pay for all damages, including the burnt apartment, elevator system, and a BMW that was soaked in the basement when fire fighters flooded the place with water.

I wonder what his wife said...

You know I was just discussing this with a buddy. If God forbid some idiot crashed his turbine jet into a house in the US and burned the place down, it would be all over the news. And with all the security precautions in place post 911, I think the politicians would pressure a ban for all turbine RC models, or RC models in general! I don't think it's just about the monetary liability anymore. If that happens, AMA better have some great lawyers because frankly, I don't think they would be able to save this hobby.

I have to believe that the computerized news parsers will catch it. It will show up on some body's desk for evaluation. The feds are very much aware of the potential for misusing the technology in our hobby.

Don't fret, the US gov't won't act until after something like this happens in the US. When have you known our government to be proactive about anything?
