It was a Futaba reciever that did not have the plastic cap a 139dp I believe.
I have preached and begged people in the past to tape up there crystals.I just did not do it on this plane. It was the only thing that I did not check and it cost me dearly.
I was so in love with this plane and proud. It was my first new gas engine that I had bought and was so proud.
I kept waking up last night and going over the accident and how stupid it was not to tape that crystal in.Man what a bummer.
I have had teeth pulled that did not hurt that bad.

Alright Big D. Time to stop beating yourself over the head with this one. Fortunatly we know what the problem was and I assure you along with yourself, that will never happen agian. I feel kinda responsable due to the fact that I helped you build it and went over the check list with you twice in my house alone and 3 times at the field, and still looked over the crystal. Either way its over now. I went to sleep with it in my head and woke up the same way....... Dont worry bro were here for you! Remember what happen with mine 6 months ago........ Not maiden but sure hurt... and Im back with a vengance.

I had my chance to learn about crystals coming out with a very fortunate (lucky) outcome. I was doing an extended engine run up on my H9 1/4 scale Cap with Saito 180. While still on the ground, I brought the throttle back and no response. Thought it was the linkage but actually was the crystal popped out of my JR receiver.

I've told this story several times online with the hopes that it won't happen to someone else. But still it has happened again and again (usually when it does, it is an experienced guy who just never heard of it happening).

I think the receiver companies (JR especially) should either find a better attachment method or put huge stickers all over warning users to tape in their crystal.

Sorry about your loss thottlestick. Sounds like you knew of the popping out issue but these things still happen. I'm hoping that me almost losing a 1/4 plane is enough to make me remember. I'm sure losing a nice plane like that will make you triple tape and triple check your crystal.

Sorry for your loss. I've never heard of this happening, but mine will be taped in from now on. Believe me we all know the feeling.

I had a friend that had a brand new 31% Columbo Anderson extra go in about 2 months ago because the crystal came out of his receiver. I never taped in my crystals till 2 months ago.

A sad hideho to you,

First, all good answers/questions thus far. I have had a crystal pop out once, long ago so all mine are taped in, always. I have also left the ant. balled up so they allways get routed through a straw.

My next and only comment is the PCM vs PPM debate, and I will never go PCM.
I have learned to fly-through a hit/bump/interference just like you did, keep flying till all the parts stop moving, workin' the throttle etc.

I have never had a crash from a hit, several close calls, but was lucky enough to be able to fly-out in time to avert terra firma.

The whole premis of lock out just doesn't sit well with me, I am a control freak and need some assurance that regardless of a interference type hit, I need to be flying it under some control, rather than lock out/no control.

I am sincerly saddened by your crash, it just makes me sick to hear a maiden go in like yours did.

No other words can offer comfort for you at this time.
Unless it was that you just hit the lottery, and good luck, hope you do.

I am not trying to debate the ppm/pcm concept, only my personal experience/opinion.

There's nothing wrong with PCM. i use PCM receivers. infact thats all i use. just because you have a PCM receiver dont mean you have to use it to it's full potential. i dont program nothing in mine. but thats a JR im not sure about FUTABA or the other brand's.

Dan, sorry to hear your loss. hope you get in the air quick with another.

P.S. i never had a crystal pop. but i do and have been taping mine in for about a year now.
