Flew my EF Yak today...Freakin' AWESOME! Such a nice plane to fly, but the GP one looks sweet too. If it's anything like it's big brother, it'll be sweet.

I bought the Seagull Extra, then returned it in favor of the GP Yak when it came out. The Yak is very nice, but has a few problems. In my opinion it is a bit heavy and fragile. All things considered I think the Seagull Extra was more robust, and lighter. I haven't flown the Yak yet because I am worried about the weak stab. I wish the wings were removable like on the Extra. The Yak has some poor joint fitup, notably where the wing ribs attach to the leading and trailing edges. I am worried about the balsa spar, and the wing joiner method has me worried. The red and blue covering is very nice but the clear stuff is junk. Looking back, I should have bought one of the Extremeflight, Hyperion, or 3DHobby Shop planes, or stayed with the Seagull Extra. I hear they fly well though, I will try mine soon (unless winter finally comes...) Brett

I have it, It flies ok but it is fragile, though not in the stab area, I have done the nastiest blenders with it. I have brtoken the motor mount out of it, and the landing gear out of it. The wings not being removable does suck quite a bit. As far as heavy with a heavily reinforced motor mount and landing gear blockit is at 1lb 8.6 oz. It flies ok and is a lot of fun. The recommneded outrunner brushless is good power for it, although I don't think the 11x3 prop they recommned for it would do much, I am using a 12x6 eprop. |

Hmmm. I love EF planes... but I have always had good luck with GP planes. There quality is usually second to none. I bought a used Patty waystaff extra 27% and it had 200+ flights on it when I got it. I added another 100+ flights to it.. and sold it to a guy who will probably add 100+ more... seems to me to be good quality... as well as having quite a few other GP planes... I'm a fan of many companies, but hate to see a company dogged for no reason... if you had bad luck thats one thing, but Great Planes has always given me and my friends GREAT customer service and great kits... In fact... when I needed a new wing tube because the tube that came with my 1/3 scale extra had a ding, they sent an entire new wing kit... so GP has really been great!

I have a GP Gene Soucy Extra 300S, and I think the quality is fantastic. It may not be the lightest, ultimate 3d machine but it is very strong and flies extremely well. It exhibits very straight lines, snaps well, rolls extremely crisply and axially, etc. Slow flight is very true and landings are a breeze. It is a good thing too, since I have experienced 9 deadsticks out of 12 flights due to engine problems. In fact, on one deadstick landing I snagged the gear on a 3' high bush at the end of the runway, and the plane pitched downward, landing on the right wing tip, right gear leg, and nose. I expected a pile of rubble but the thing barely had any damage. Just a bent gear leg, cracking in the cowl, and scuffed monokote. I was a little disappointed with a couple of things on the Yak but it looks great, is should fly well too. The same spar design is used on the Fliton planes so it should hold up. Take care, Brett | ||||||||||||||||||

ok maybe I should expand my opinion here...first, let me say that I missused the word quality here, I think the wood and materials that they use are fine, but recently I have built some GP planes and as an Industrial designer I must say that I found several things that are not very well made, the last instruction manual I used was horrible...photos were really bad...you can only see dark spots and that makes difficult some things, instructions in some parts are confusing.....and the sequence of building is bad...they tell you to build something just to take it off on the next step, I think they don´t care much about consumer ergonomics, and found some things on the kits that could have been done better and easier or just better!!! any way If I see a GP next to a nother plane, say hangar 9 for instance...I will go with hangar 9, their parts, material and final product is way better, I must say I had lot of GP planes and their were not good.....you can se now theres a post about real flight g3.5 being bad......and that has never happened with AFPD.....I mean every company has bad details. but with GP I have found a lot.
