Default Re: PA Thrust 20 + 30A ESC Questions

At over 30 ounces your plane is alot heavier than 26.5 oz. it is designed to be. You are almost at the weight of their Extra 260, which uses the Thrust 30. Is there any way you can lighten your plane? Is your battery the reason? Good luck.

It's definitely cheaper to try different props before buying a new set up. Try an 11-4.7 slow fly and a 12-6E prop and see what kind of #'s you get from the wattmeter. I think you'll need 325-375 watts to fly a 30 oz plane and get the expected performance you're looking for. I don't know if the motor can take that power though, keep us informed.

Hey Whipper,

when I set up my Addiction the first time, I used a Thrust 20 and an old ESC which I had laying around. I couldn't even go full throttle, because the motor was stalling. That was on an APC 11x3.8. I had to change the speed controller (I went for the Quantum 30) and it worked flawlessly. I tried the 11x5.5, 11x4.7 and 11x3.8. On all props, I had plenty of power for hovering. And I am using a "heavy" battery (3s 2200 mAh).

So I believe, that the ESC and your motor doesn't pair up well for some reason. Do you have another ESC laying around so you can swap and see how the plane behaves?

Cheers,

BT

Default Re: PA Thrust 20 + 30A ESC Questions

Thanks for the information guys,

Ok this is what I got. I am running the pa thrust 20 and their 30a esc. The 30oz as previously stated was from the original motor and esc I put in it, which brought the plane to ~30oz. I couldnt get the plane to balance from being nose heavy so I decided to use there recomended setup. Now I cant get enough power out of it to even hover it.

I did some testing on my watt meter with different props, heres what I got.

11x5.5 189 watts 18~ amps

11x4.7sf 191 watts 19~amps

11x3.8sf 198 watts 20.2 amps

10x5e 164 watts (i forgot to write the amps down)

Now on the thrustmotor web site they say 286 peak watts. Im not getting even close to that. Now this is with an older tp2100 3s. I tried a new tp extreme 2200 and it would hover, at full throttle. So just a very tiny pull out of hover. I went back and checked my installation and I dont think that I did anything wrong. I also reset the esc to defaults, which is what the instructions say to do and that the defaults is all you should need. So im out of ideas and I guess either I did something wrong or maybe I got a motor that just doesnt run right.

Thanks for the help guys,

Mike

Yeah, something definitely doesn't look right. You should have plenty of power with that set up. Have you tried to contact PA directly via emai to tell them about your issues?

Just found this thread, I bought my Addiction from Atlanta Hobby and went with the Torque motor. Good motor with good power. Had a midair, new Addiction, went with a Scorpion 3008-32 second time out, slightly heavier, more power and quite a bit cheaper. THIS PLANE ROCKS! I hope you get the mystery solved and have a GOOD time with it!
