Default Re: Pilot Barrier Fence

Our field had metal fencing as barriers, that stood about 2 feet tall.

When flying a profile on 72 MHz FM (not PCM) and my antenna touched the metal, the plane freaked out (while on the ground)

When flying a plane on 72 MHz PCM, and touched the fence, the plane didn't do anything, worked as normal.

Since then, we changed to using PVC piping with that orange fencing so there is no metal at all, no problems since, although we lost that field this past winter,

There could be different type of plastic orange neting, but I have see'n 40% Edge w/ 150 DA go full throttle in to it, broken prop, broken engine cowl, little damage to the fancing and airplane stoped.

We view orange plastic safety netting as a means to stop the engine, thereby protecting the pilot and spectators from a spinning prop. The fence has been hit twice causing the engine to stop and as a side benefit minimal damage to the aircraft.

Our field used to let the grass grow up in 5 places about 10 feet wide with a 10 foot spacing between them. It made a nice natural barrier and worked well, but about a year ago they mowed it down and put up the green snow fence stuff that looks very similiar to the orange but blends in better. I have seen several wings get damaged from hitting this stuff but it stopped the plane. I still like the grass idea better.

My home club uses nothing, but I visited a club in Toledo that had the high, thick grass between the pilot stations and the strip. I really liked it much better than the orange snow fence.

As a side note we hung a "Right Rudder Please" sign at the old timer bench.

...Huh? You mean the rudder still works on takeoff and in the air? I thought it was only for slow taxiing. Proper procedure for takeoff is line up straight, punch the power, and just before the plane tears into the pits, yank full up elevator. Learn something new every day.

Our club uses tall grass to separate runway and pilots. Much better than fence... airplanes don't get destroyed. Also much harder to trip over.
