Ya, I ended up getting G3.5. I flew both at the lhs, and it seemed like FSone flew a little more realistically but G3.5 had more cool stuff to keep it interesting. However, I changed the sim rate to 125% and it seems to feel a lot more realistic, especially in anything 3D. The plane doesn't just float around when you take the throttle off in a hover. Both great sims though!!!

In short
For helis G3
Airplanes AFPD (you can even practice IMAC)
FS1 is a toy. I would love to try FS1 again with these tweakings people are talking about but AFPD needs barely any tweaking out of the box.

Can someone comment as to which sim is better for those who like scale-like flying of non-aerobatic aircraft, including flaps, landing gear and different ground/aloft wind conditions?

Also, does either sim have an Internet connection mode for those who want to practice formation flying or pylon racing?

TIA

hmmmm?? interesting thoughts..............I have played around on G3 for about 6 months and i play around on it alot. I was looking to get a second sim for just a different sim to have. I tried FS and totally hated it. I didn't think the physics we're good at all , it was almost like playing around on an arcade game or something. I spent a little time on areofly though , and i really liked that. but FS.........in my opinion doesn't even come close to G3...........not by a long shot.

I think it really all comes down to personal preference. If you can just go to a hobby store that has the sims and play them and which ever one you feel most confortable with and like the most.....thats the one for you. I have my opinions on the different sims and have played them all but they are just that, my opinions and others will be different. I can also say that I don't think you will be disapointed with any of the sims. They are all great and all have thier own advantages over the others. Anyways, try to find a shop that has them where you can play them and go with what you have the most fun on.

Well, I havn't flown AFPD, but I have flown FS one and G3.5. G3.5 is the only one with the option to play online and it also has plent of warbirds and some other scale aircraft with flaps, smoke, retracts, etc. The wind can be set at any speed from any direction and can be made to vary in both speed and direction. Even the angle, position, and brightness of the sun can be changed. However, I don't know much about FS one or any of the other sims for flying scale planes. Maybe somone else can chime in here. Just my 2 cents, hope it helps.

Thanks for the info, Paul. Years back, I tried Dave Brown's RCFS before ever getting into the air and found that experience to have saved my planes in lots of "hectic" situations. Once, my plane was blown behind some high trees and I was able to somehow imagine its orientation and fly it back out into sight, just like I would have done in the sim. Now that I'm moving toward trying to fly in a more scale-like manner, I'm looking toward the sims to emulate real-world parameters, especially wind. I'd like someday to see them let users configure horizontal rotors and vertical thermals in size, velocity and speed while traversing a landscape. Then I could learn how to "visualize" those otherwise invisible forces were having on my planes. Maybe they could add a colored "smoke" effect to the winds so we could actually see what we are feeling at the sticks. Another thing (maybe this is already there) would be the ability to change your position on the flying field to help emulate your orientation on a sim field to what is closer to your real field.

On realflight you can mess with different thermal settings, and you can fly from any position on the field. You can even make your own field to be just what you want.

the transmitter for FS One feels like a cheap airhogs radio, if you dont plan on using your own transmitter, id go with g 3.5

How about the Phoenix? Cheaper and good physics too, especially for helis.

I've been a G3 (G3.5) user since the day it was released. I recently tried FSOne on a fast PC and now I use FSOne and no longer have G3. I think the physics are more realistic w/FSOne and there are no screen jitter frame rate issues that plagued G3. As far as the controller goes, my G3 controller broke many times and so far my TacCon controller is holding up just fine. I miss multiplayer option but it was buggy and I got dropped alot and couldnt host most of the time anyway. FSOne has way better ground handling as well (alot like AFPD).
