Default Carden edge 540

Has anyone out there built a 100cc class carden edge 540 completely by the plans, covered with monocote or ultracote and come out around 28 pounds. the plans say thats how much itll weigh but i dont see how its possible if you go exactly by the plans. my edge has come around 30.5 pounds....

yeah im running standard mufflers but the engine is a 106 not a 100 so hopefully it will be able to pull the extra weight.

That is about average for a stock build, I thought you are covering this with glass or are you talking about a different build?

me and my dad were sorta scared to cut any hols in the foam or wood because we were worried about the strength. this is also our first real 3d airplane, but of course there will be others in the future. ive heard horror stories about arfs and have seen one just randomly explode in air, so i would prefer to build them, but thing is it takes a while longer but with an arf your in the air within about a week...hard decision

yes me and my dad are still covering with fiberglass, but we have only added the same amount of weight as if we had used monocote. and also we have a direct drive system so that requires a murl hydesoft mount which weighs 3/4 of a pound.

I built one about 5 yrs ago. It had a 3W 100 on it with standard mufflers. I didn't worry about weight when I built it but I should have. It was fat at about 29.5 lbs. Be sure and weigh each piece of wood used to cover the foam and use the lightest ones to glue up the stab and fin. This is what I am doing on the second one that I am building.

Good luck.

Bobby

I built a 35% Carden Edge for a friend. He asked the plane not be lightened at all - He wanted it built like a bull. The plane came in at 29 lbs and flew wonderful.

Do not go adding anything extra or heavy (sorry dude . . .like fiberglass) and Carden's come out great.

My Dad just bult a 27 lb Carden 260 with the basic lightening and it is awsome.
