Default Do I need and ignition cutoff ??

Guys......quick question: I am building up the last few parts on my 35% WH Sukhoi. It's outfitted with a smartfly power expander pro , two fromeco regs for the servo's and one for the ignition , with Hitec 5955's going everywhere ( 8 total ) plus the throttle. So it'll be running two fromeco switches , two 5200mah batts and a 2400mah and switch for the ignition.

I think i need it for extra safety right? Are they pretty easy to hook up........and do i need one? any advice would be good. I was looking at the smartfly optical kill switch........i'll pick one up if you guys think i'll need it.

thanks guys!!

Jeff

I've been using the Smart Fly kill and I would highly recommend using a Fiber Optic kill switch.

Jeff- you could make it simple and inexpensive and hook up a servo to the choke. Put it on a dial and you can use partial choke when needed. You can use the choke servo to kill the engine if you need.

I have the same plane and have always used a throttle kill with the choke as a backup kill. I also usually leave the return spring on the carb as an extra saftey to bring the throttle back to idle if all else fails.

Just don't put the ign kill on a switch... Put it on a rotary knob if your Tx is so equipped...

I am personally a fan... but once I wasn't Last year it helped me on several occassions.. lost 2 mufflers (very high idle), lost throttle servo.

just my 2 cents

Choke or the smart-fly cut off Hell Yea

As far as putting it on a switch, as long as your able to walk and chew gum at the same time put it on a switch, but Dmichael is right a rotory on the choke helps to keep the engine running when you have a ZDZ.

OK.....thank you guys. It sounds like i'll get one for sure now.

what I don't get is this......let's say i lose the signal to plane , it automatically kills my motor right? Or is that wrong........it just sets the motor back to idle until i get a signal again?

To be honest.....i don't see the point of it killing your motor if your just going to lose the plane anyways....right? Also....if you get a bad hit or something , will it kill your motor then too? So you would have to bring it in dead stick , with all the other control still working?

Just trying to figure out , what's the safest way for myself and spectator's that could be watching , in case something happens. I would like to be able to set it up to an idle , that way if i get a signal back , i can just fly it in with the motor running........or is that impossible?

Thanks you guys.......

The optical kill switch or choke servo is put on a specific channel.....i.e a switch or rotary dial. When you set your failsafe for your radio put that switch in the position you wish it to be.

On my plane its throttle idle and all other sticks/switches last known position. So the optical kill on my plane would still send the signal to keep the motor running.

If I had a RX failure then the optical kill would shutoff.....but then I wouldn't have control of any servos either so it would be pretty obvious at that point my plane would be gone.

There are some good options to these bigger bulkier kill switches. My friend has run these for over a year with good results so im going to use them from now on. they are simple plug and play so no big change is needed.

If you loose signal to the plane you are better off having the motor shut down and the plane going straight in. It is much better then having a runaway powered up plane coming at you.
