Default open motor box or close?

I just want to know what are the effects of having an open motor box? i've looked around the build threads to see what are the common practice for building a motor box for a Carden. Do you guys normally seal the front end of the motor box or leave the lightening holes open?

I don't have a Carden yet, but my planes and most others have open holes in the motorbox and front bulkhead.

I like to close them on my Cardens to keep the engine heat and fumes out of the fuselage. chris
