Unhappy DA50 making a ticking sound !!!

Hello,

I have noticed over the past several weekends that my DA 50 ( on a WM Patty Extra) is making a continuous ticking sound when running. A fellow flyer has commented that there could be play in the conrod. Has anyone else experienced this. I am using a 23 x 8 MSC prop and am on the 7th Gallon of fuel. It is one of the early versions with serial number 863 - have had it for a while but have not done too much flying on it. Other than this, the motor is running sweet and does not miss a beat.

If this has been discussed in another thread, kindly point me that way. Thanks.

TIA,
Aamer

Dude, send it in to DA for the fix. Some of the early versions had this trouble.

If you hear it when running not when you turn it by hand Could be loose piston pin. Send it in.

Ok, so this is a known problem. Sending in the motor is not easy sitting in Pakistan. Is it simple enough to replace if I ask DA to send the parts over ? If not, I think I will pull the engine and try to send it somehow.

Thanks,
Aamer

I can hear it when it is running and I just went out to the workshop and checked - I can hear it when I rock the prop shaft back and forth with the spinner. Sounds like I am in trouble.

all of the DA50 engines will have that sound when you rock it back and forth by hand mostly if I rememer right is when you are rocking it in between compression strokes. So when shaft is turning freely but when you are running it you shouldn't hear any ticking at least I never did. I can't say for sure it's the piston pin but if it is, I know it's only $5 but don't know if it's easy to replace or not. Shoot them an email. Normally if that's the case you should get lower top rpm and engine heats up faster. Sorry that I can't help much but send an email to DA and explain the situation, let them diagnose it for you.

Aamer if you like you can also send the engine to Toni Clark in Germany www.toni-clark.com he is a authorized service center for Desert Aircraft product for Europe, the Middle East, and Parts of Aisa. You may save a few bucks in shipping this way and it will still be factory repaired.

That motor is on its way out buddy, if it is the early version DA should replace it as they know about this problem and they will fix it under warranty. Same thing happened to 2 of my DA-50 engines.

If you keep flying with that engine it will seize up as it is the hard facing on the crankshaft that will break down, the crank journel will fail and the bearing will collapse and you will have a motor that doesn't work anymore.

Also they should do the other mod that the DA-50 had problems the crankcase pressure line to the reed block will need fixing as some of the early DA-50 engines would cut out at idle.

My first one had this problem as well..you could hear a high-pitched "tinging" especially when on the ground..It was the wrist pin..my second one doesnt have this problem..after the first one got upgraded its been perfect..over 25 gallons thru it!
