Help! my 1st "GIANT"... set up questions

Well I just got my 1st giant, a used Handar 9 Cap 33%. It has a ZDZ 80 RV-J with a JR 1400mah 4 cell on ignition. A spektrum AR7000 receiver powered by 2 2700mah 5 cell packs, 4 Hitech 5645 MG's on the ailerons(2 per wing), 2 Hitech 5645 MG's on elevators, 1 Hitech 5735 on rudder(pull-pull), and a Hitech 525BB for both the throttle and choke. Just wondering if this is a decent set up or what you more experienced guys would change. I was thinking of switching the receiver to either a R922 or an AR9100 for the multiple remote receivers and the built in powerbus. Any advice you guys may have would be greatly appreciated, thanks

if it were my plane i would get rid of the batteries and go with 2 1100mah a123's or even a pair of lipo's. keep the ignition battery though it will work out just fine. thats what i have on my 30%er. those 5645's will work but are SLOW. if you just do general sport flying nothing with fast manuverses they will work but i would as per my set up go with 7985's on ailerons and elevators. rudder servo will be just fine but you could save 3oz if you went with another 7985 or 7955. the ar7000 will be just fine. just fly it and see how you like it. but thats just my opinion and thats how i set my 30%er up. you could save some more weight by getting rid of the choke servo and using a manual choke.

I believe what you have is perfect! Fly the snot out of it. Just make sure your batteries are 6 volts for your reciever and you should be good to go!

I dont think you need lipos. We still have one of our 40% Cardens on 2 2700mah 6 volt batteries and get 4 flights out of it. We just quick charge it and fly some more.

Mikey,

I'm a firm believer in spend the most you can afford on receiver and servos. That being said, I like the idea of updating to the AR9100 (I use them for my stuff and they are great) if only to get more remotes on the plane. You can still use the AR7000 but make sure that you use the logger to do a very thorough ground check (in all directions, have a friend turn the plane for you as well as hold it's tail up and spin it) if the flight logger says you are good, go fly, if not keep moving things until you are good. With only one remote, this becomes more critical.

Depending on the type of flying, you may not be completely happy with the servos but they will work just fine, it really is a matter of personal preference. I have planes with 5645s and they are slower than anything else I have and the centering could be better (using a hitec programmer you can adjust the dead band to get a slightly better response). The 5735mg is a big servo (in size) but may not be enough for some 3d antics on a 33% plane, you have to try it and see how it flys for your style of flying. If you sport fly and do some (basic and sportsman) IMAC these will probably work just fine, lots of crazy aerobatics for long periods or higher precision IMAC means that you may be happier with some of the better options out there.

Some people also like a fast servo on the throttle as well (especially for 3D).

Remember, these are just opinions, take all of them with a grain of salt (even from me ) in the end you need to match your required performance with the way you like to fly and what is in your budget so you can fly.

Good Luck and Have Fun (we're supposed to be having fun, right?)!

You are good to go, just check your batts between flights with a load tester. Hanger 9 makes a good one that will load test a .5, 1, or 2 amps. I use 1 amp load to test. Lithum ion batts and regulators if you go any bigger. That 80 engine will fly the crap out of that airframe.

I use the JR 921 rx's, but do a range check from all sides and check the data logger.

Fly it like it is. Cycle your batteries good and make sure they are good. Save your money up for the next plane. Get some good use out of what's in it while you are getting used to gassers.

If you're wanting to spend some money and get the best stuff for the plane. Here is a good list to start with.

HS-7955's all around
A123 2300's
AR9100 RX

Thanks for all the advice and tips fellas. I think I'm just gonna start with what I got for now and make a few upgrades here and there. Just gonna get used to a gasser before I start switching everything out if it doesn't really need to be replaced.
