Joe Nall 2013 - Jase's Night flight
Discussion / Posted by jdracing3 / 05-22-2013 @ 11:20 AM / 488 Views / 0 Comments / Reply
I can't believe Joe Nall has come and gone soo quickly. It was nice to see the friends we have whom we only see once a year. ...including the ones we see often as well ...it seems we always continue right where we left off. The weather here in Michigan has let winter hang on so the South Carolina sun was a welcome change.

Here is a video my wife shot of Jase flying Thursday night on the 3D line with his Extreme Flight 104" Extra 300. This was the first full flight on the extra at night AND the first time shooting video at night with the new camera. With that being said, we were still trying to figure out the correct camera settings. So needless to say it's not the best quality. ...the next one will be better.

Is this powerbox fine for my plane?

My Evolution 58GX gas engine CH Ignition Conversion
Discussion / Posted by earlwb / 05-20-2013 @ 11:45 AM / 963 Views / 1 Comments / Reply
A while back I came into possession of a Evolution 58GX gas engine. This was one of the earlier versions with two magnets on the drive hub and a old style Valach CDI unit too. First the Valach CDI unit had the power input pulled off. I am planning on using the engine in a giant size Great Planes Aeromaster Biplane that I got too. It just fits inside my car so it'll be the biggest plane I will be flying later. I am somewhat limited as to how big of a airplane I can fly by whether I can fit it into my car or not. I do have a Subaru Outback and the rear seats fold down flat so it does have a fair amount of room in the back of course. But even then it is still limiting as to how big something can be to fit in inside.

I first decided to see if I could fix the Valach Ignition module or not. That actually did turn out well and I successfully repaired the Valch ignition unit and test ran the engine using it. But then I found out that these earlier Valach units weren't all that reliable and that many people had problems with them. Plus you had to use a special spark plug with the top cut off along with the special spark plug cap and a thin wall deep socket if you ever wanted to change spark plugs.

So I decided to convert the engine over to use the CH-Ignitions module instead. The conversion turned out really well too. It has a nice metal timing sensor holder and since the hall effect sensor only detects one of the magnets (one magnet is north pole oriented and the other magtnet is south pole oriented) it was not a problem to get it setup.

I used regular pump gasoline from my local gas station. I mixed it with Stihl Ultra oil. I was running a Top Flite 24x10 propeller on the engine. I was getting around 5750 RPMs with that combination. The muffler is not very good as I measured 102DB using a iPhone DB meter app. According to Pe Reiver's Prop power calculator spreadsheet application the engine was developing around 6.5 hp.

The Engine from when I first got it:

Here is the new CH-Ignitions timing sensor holder mounted on the engine:

The CH Ignitions module compared to the Valach module:

Here I am test running the engine to see how it does using the CH-Ignition conversion:

Joe Nall... What can i say about Joe Nall? IT WAS AMAZING!!!! WOW! When we arived on Monday i was blown away by the beauty of Triple Tree and the size of the event. We got a great camping spot on the 3D line by the pond, and set up the trailer and canopy right on the edge of the pond on the 3D line. In the morning i would get the Slick ready to fly then roll it up to the center line, after that i usualy play with the Icon A5 in the pond. Triple Tree was 100% filled up with planes, campers, and golfcarts. I spent most of my time on the 3D line but went up to the Main Flight line for noon demos and warbird time. The food and bath housed lived up to what people said they were like, AMAZING! The planes i saw where all beautiful and most of the 3D pilots where very skilled but some where out of control. The noon demos did not impress me very much from what i saw in videos from previous years but some of the stuff was pretty cool, i really enjoyed Jase Dussia 's performance. The planes on the float line where Huge! The electric line was out of control and the 3D line was fun! I got some good flights on the slick and dipped the tail 4 times. At night it was AMAZING! Jase Dussia and Joe Smith did awesome night flights and i flew the extra a few times at night, after that everyone just threw out the little foamies and do that all night. I will definatly be returning next year!
