Re: Danny Szabo RC Helicopter Video St. George AMAZING ....MUNCH!
Well maybe it is because I always hang around some of the best helicopter pilots in the world but to me that was a pretty "regular" flight for a pilot of his level. We always give the newbie pilots (or horrible pilots like myself) a larger area and ask them to keep it "out there".
For an event the AMA requires 25 feet and a spotter. As long as you are following the limits and guidelines you are covered. Most of the senior pilot will yank someone to the side if they see them flying above there ability at an event. Personally... when I am at an event I fly first thing in the morning and use a few flight stations up when I am flying.
I have seen more people hurt by "old men with big planes" than I have with "kidz doing mad 3Dz" with a helicopter. Have accidents happened yes... sure. But a plane will kill you just as quick. As far as parts go I have been hit by a few while videoing but they usually loose so much momentum when they come off the aircraft they do little to no damage. I put the latest crash videos in the RC heli vid section. I had 3 crash right in front of me this weekend on tape.
The problem, is in my opinion, that pilots watch these videos and think they are going to be able to do piro flips in a month when in reality it takes most "normal people" months, if not years, to learn to just to fly well. Forget about a knife edge snakes! You HAVE to be comfortable in all orientation both upright and inverted and make stick movements without thinking before you start trying the fancy stuff. If you start to panic... you had better be QUICK on the throttle hold.
At our club we always work with the newbie pilots plane or heli till they have the basics. There is no substitute for experience.
