Default MAIDEN FLIGHT! COMPLETE SUCCESS!

UPDATE! THE STAUDACHER FLYS! COMPLETE SUCCESS!!

Just got off the horn with Mr. Light, and the maiden flight of the monster 70% Staudacher was a success! With aproximately 40 people in attendance, Jared plugged in the external 12v power source for the starter, and fired her up! After a a few laps on the runway, John gradually added power, and the legendary Bob Sawyer Staudacher took flight! John flew about 10 laps around the field and brought her in for a gracefull landing which was met with an ovation of applause from the spectators in attendance!

On behalf of The FlyingGiants and our 20,000 members and friends, CONGRATS to Bob, John, and Jared on the successful journey!

The Boys are currently adding more pitch to the prop as they experienced some "lag" in the motor when applying power. They will be moving from 10degrees to 12, and weather permitting, will put on another flight within the hour. Other than that, John said the Staudacher flew VERY well, and light!

Photos and video will be on FlyingGiants this evening of the days events.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Today, the legendary 70% Staudacher is slated to fly. This is arguably the most high profile model in the US, and has been a favorite of our community for many years. The Staudacher was born in 2000 as an auto cad drawing in Bob "Sensei" Sawyer's computer, and a year later the project was a reality. Since then She has been a hangar queen deluxe, and with renewed interest of our friends Jared and John, the countdown to her maiden flight is on!

Yesterday the boys arrived at the test site which is a private landing field in a very remote location. The attached the wings and canopy, started the motor with the new external starter battery, ran the motor up again (video in the other LE threads), and took her for a drive. For the first time since her creation, she was actually moving under power. The boys taxied her around the field, configured failsafe, monitored fuel usage, and got excellent range checks all the way around. From this observer's point of view, they are taking safety and setup very seriously. During the maiden, the Staudacher will only have enough fuel for a couple passes, and will land immediately for a thorough post flight inspection. The boys expect to get a few more flights on her this Saturday.

After taxi tests, they brought her into the hangar and are currently polishing her up for the big day!

Which is today. FlyingGiants HQ is being told the flight will occur later this afternoon. Rest assured, we will have full photo coverage of the maiden, which will be followed up by some serious video.
