Brave, I am VERY! interested in how your engine mount/clearance with the cowl is working out.

I am going to build a similar size P-51 from plans and have been struggling with DA-50/G62 engine choice. Really the only thing holding me back from the 62 is cowl issues. Would love to see some pics if possible.
Thanks
Mike MorganHey Mike thanks for the reply. At the time of my asking my question concerning which engine to use, I have learned probably more than I needed to. However, it's all very useful info. to know. I went ahead with the G62 and have added a 90 degree carb. intake manifold, from Toni Clark, very awesome and tucks the carb, into the coweling, I have also added a spring start to the back plate that makes starting very very fun and easy. My plane comes in at just under 23 lbs. with a sullivan smoke system, 24 oz. smoke tank, and no retracts at this time and flys like a dream. I am running a jinger 22-14 just fine. Have ran a 3W 22-8 as well with no probs. I don't know at this time what rpm is at but with that much torque I'm ok with it for now. The madien flight was done with a 24" prop. and yes it flew great but it was a total accident. Because of smoke, I have obvisouly installed a inverted Pitts muffler w/smoke which really required lots of cutting of the cowel...... augh. There wasn't enough room behind the engine to mount a canister and I wasn't about to rake out the cash to go custom. Besides, I painted the muffler to match the cowel and I'm fine with that. The plan looks as great as it flys. If you can afford it, go custom on the muffler to make it fit, or you may be able to make the wrap around work if you can space your engine far enough away from the firewall and isolation mount. Talk to the guys at Bisson mufflers for that. The only cutting you would have to do is for the spark plug area, but other then that, you can fit a G62 into the coweling with very little cutting. I will take some picts to back this up soon..........
