For what its worth here's the way I make sure I'm not too lean during flight.
1) Never lean the low end so much that the engine hesitates when moving to full throttle
2) Never lean top end so much that the revs drop below maximum at full throttle
3) Always wait a few minutes for engine to reach operating temperature before final adjustments
