I crossed my wires on my plane and I don't see why it'd make a differance as you are crossing both wires the same amount so therefore reducing their length the same amount. It worked for me very well and if there were any differance in throw I'd rather just take it out using the radio.
Also, how is lowering a travel value in your radio causing more gear wear? Wouldn't the gears wear at the same rate as if they received travel across their entire limit? The only thing I can see is that the teeth only currently being used could wear down more than the teeth that would've been used if full travel was used. I guess as long as you don't need to use full travel someday than no big deal. I'm also guessing that the gear wear on the used portion of the gearing would be very minimal and when deciding to use the rest of the servo travel, the other teeth would just than start wearing down and always would have less backlash. LOL, who really cares right as gears aren't all that expensive.
