Re: Sick of fuel tanks---How to use a soda bottle?

i used a milk bottle which isn't clear but the shape is better than the water bottles i had to choose from. i noticed the wide cap of my milk bottle flexes a little under the weight of the stopper and tubing so maybe that is contributing to the leaking? i haven't fueled mine yet but i'll look closely after the first couple of flights for leaks. i'd like to try a 17 ounce fiji bottle and will keep an eye out for one but, in my opinion, the other water bottles were just too thin and would have needed more support which would have negated any weight savings. i also didn't like the idea of a heavy clunker kicking around in a really flimsy bottle.

Re: Sick of fuel tanks---How to use a soda bottle?

Here is my setup. The bottles are some kind of flavored water that I found in Hamilton,Ohio (Jungle Jim's international food store) some time ago and don't have the name. They are square and thicker than a Fiji bottle. I used tank fittings from here http://www.heliproz.com/prodinfo.asp?number=114882.
I used Seal All on the fittings and tested it for a few days with gas and so far so good. I used Viton for the pickup tubes from McMaster Carr http://www.mcmaster.com/#viton-fluor...tubing/=8j9oj9 . The clear tubing I'm using for the vents is from McMaster also it's Tigon but gets hard when submerged in gas (more so than the yellow) but it works for me on the vents.

Many install the loops because they claim that fuel comes out during flight, but a properly installed vent line will keep a slight positive pressure on the line and keep this from happening in the first place along with the pumper carb drawing dure flight.

Yes....but it will also keep you from dribbling fuel when ya pick up the tail (with a full tank) and walk the plane to the flight line

Dribbling a couple drops of fuel while walking your plane to the flight line is not the real issue, it's the larger amount of fuel that is being scavenged out of your tank during flight. LOL

Bob...I'm interested in hearing more about a positive pressure vent line? Angling or bending the line so it receives ram air pressure, or ????

Many of the the installations that I have seen as I am sure you have seen is a flexible tube that hangs below the fuse in a range from 1" to 4" long. The hose that is hanging out sways back in flight, as the air flows past, it causes a draw on the tube and the scavenge effect is present. A short forward facing brass tube will do the trick, or a short flex line 1" long facing directly down from the bottom of the fuse but cut on the positive airflow side as a 1/2" to 3/4" scarf will cause a positive pressure to the tank. Don't take my word for it, try it for yourself and see.

The whole reason I started using this type tank a few years ago was to cut as much weight as possible and Tygon tubing has weight, so why place this sytem in the airplane and start adding a bunch of tubing.

Bob,

You would really cringe if you saw that I have a second cluck and a third line in my tank. LOL.

Yep....which is why I used as much aluminum tube as possible for my vent system. Way lighter than Tygon.

Good stuff guys....

I found some cheap fuel line for me.....
Nebulizer tubing and Ventilator tubing....
I Soaked it in fuel, w/o any ill effects....
I would say, that it MIGHT get hard over time, but not sure....

If you are in the Medical field like myself.....Can you say "ENDLESS SUPPLY"

No picts, as my camera's battery is dead, and my wife misplaced charge cord...
(They always do that kind of thing!)
