DA 170

Any one flying a pilot yak 54 37.5 with a Da 170 ? im more into freestyle and 3D, what set up are u using? size prop headers and cans, i was talking to a fellow member and he was suggesting that the GP-176 Evo is a WAY better motor that the DA 170, any feedback on this would be appreciated, im about to dump almost 2200 on motor and headers, also in using the smart fly eq6 turbo, is it safe to use the pin flag? or just go with the switches? wiht the pinflag i cant really check my batt voltage thanks

I have been flying a Pilot-RC 37.5% Yak with a DA-170 and Pro-Flow canister mufflers. I have been happy with this combination. I use a Mejzlik 30x13 prop to keep the noise down. My plane is quieter than any other gasser at my local field. I fly 3d and freestyle about equally.

For switch, I use a soft-switch into a Spektrum PowerSafe receiver. Two A123 packs power the receiver. I field charge after three flights so I'm using less than half of the A123 capacity.

I have 1195 flights on this setup.

I cannot comment on the GP-176. My DA-170 is one of the early models, but it has been updated by DA. I've needed to send it in for warranty work, but overall, I've been happy with its reliability and performance.

I fly a DA 170 in a H9 Sukhoi. Unfortunately I fly stock mufflers. I also use the Mz30-13 or sometimes the 29-12 three blade. From the box to the air, the engine just performs. Period! My buddy in Canada loves the GP 176. I don't think you can go wrong one way or the other. Ford/chevy, you choose. I also have the Smartfly eq10 in the sukhoi. Never had a problem with that either. Set up for multiple servo was a since, and Randy will take all the time in the world with you and questions. Unfortunately, I fly Futaba, and Sbus has won me over, so the need for Smartfly is short lived with me. Matching programable servos with Sbus is just as easy if not easier.

QQ 120" Yak: DA 170, 14" headers, re3 pipes, and a Mej 30x12. It's quiet, has tons of power and the best service in the industry!

Can't comment on the GP, but the DA170 is the most realiable trouble free engine I've owned.

If I had the choice of putting a new engine in an airframe, and the choices were DA or GP. Honestly, I would pick the DA. Which says something, as I'm not a DA fan, per say. I'm a 3W guy, and the 3W would be my choice over all of them.

I'm flying a Thunder Tiger- TOC 37.5 Yak with a DA-150 on stock mufflers with a mejzlic 30-12L and love the combo. Plenty of power. I am going to try a Falcon 32-10 to see if that has better performance but am happy with the performance as it is. Also just bought the new DA-150L for another TOC Yak that I am going to build this winter. I would definitely go with the DA, wether it was a 170 or a 150

I have the Pilot 37.5 and the DA 170 on Pro Flow cans fly's it well but...... I went to the GP 176evo on the cans and gained considerable more power. In fact I feel way more comfortable in a hover with the GP. Now if you want stupid power put the Smooth pipes on the GP. It flys like a foamy out of a hover. I am absolutely shocked at the power increase. The GP is as reliable as my DA. I have two GP's now and I love them. I just hope service and parts remain obtainable.

My DA 170 is super reliable on ProFlow cans. As for switches, I use the pin switch on a powersafe receiver (fails on) running hobbico LiFe batteries.

Pilot 42% Edge 540

Try a 31X10W, if you don't have noise regs. It'll get a little loud at full song. I put a 31x10W on my QS 150 3W. Lots more grunt out of the hole, great 3D prop. 31x10W would be a little light for the 170.

On the DA I use the Biela 3W 3D copy and the GP I use the 3W 3D prop.

I have two DA-170's , both on RE3 pipes, with 14" headers.

They both have monster power.

No issues with either engine.

They turn a Vess Stealth 32C @ 6450 rpm.

Both planes have the Smartfly EQ6 Turbo with the Smartfly pin switches.

I have never had an issue with a Smartfly product.

As far as the GP-176 goes, I have never even seen one.

Thanks for the info, I'll try the 31x10W. Noise is not an issue. Have you tried the 32x10 on a 150?

I have one, but my 170 is piped.
6500 rpm, very loud, instant transition.
Actually goes on like a switch.
Takes some time to get used to for hovers, but ever where else is pretty awesome.
