gasoline/ethanol OK for DA?
I can't seem to get any strait 'ol gasoline around here, only stuff with 10% ethanol in it. I assume the answer is yes, but is it OK to run this or should I search really hard to fine normal gasoline? It is a DA85...

Not sure... I'd go with regular gas if it was me though.

I'm in the same boat. So far it has not been an issue. Both my 50's have run great. I do wonder about the carb gaskets and such, but given that I have no choice, 10% ethanol it is.

Re: gasoline/ethanol OK for DA?
Ethanol safe???????????? That is all we can get here in Northwest Indiana and that is what everybody uses, year, after year, after year. Can't say our engines are getting messed up as not to many are getting worn out around here. Where guys can get pure unleaded gas they think this ethanol stuff is crap, go figure.

I didn't say it was crap, I just had the question as to which was best and was it worth me trying to find an alternative.

Re: gasoline/ethanol OK for DA?
Dunno for 2 stroke engines, but when i put 10% Ethanol in my car, it seems to run smoother, with more power & i get better fuel economy.
I think (not 100% sure) Ethanol is hydroscorpic (absorbs/attracts water) and as such the fuel system must be able to tolerate a small amount of moisture without rusting components. Someone please correct me if i am wrong. |

Re: gasoline/ethanol OK for DA?
10% ethanol isn't enough to really affect how the engine runs. You may notice a slight needle change (need to richen a bit), but I really doubt it.
Higher concentrations of ethanol will make it run a bit cooler, but ethanol also has less heat energy than gasoline. So you get less power from a given volume of fuel. Plus, ethanol burns efficiently at a different air/fuel ratio than gasoline, so you need more fuel just to keep it from going lean. That's why if you convert a gasoline engine to alcohol, you usually have to open up the jets on the carb. Racing guys do this alot. Having said that, don't worry about 10%. 20% would definitely be noticable, but even then it's nothing to worry about. My $.02 is that ethanol, in any concentration, will eventually dry out the gaskets/diaphram in the carb, but it would probably be time for a carb kit before then anyway. |

Sorry, did not mean you said that. I know people in states where they sell both types of gas and they hate the thought of using ethanol gas even though it is cheaper than regular unleaded with no ethanol. This is not meant to be a negative slam at anybody just a comment on what I have heard from others.

Re: gasoline/ethanol OK for DA?
Here in TX, all you can get is up to 10% alcohol mix. All of us at our club who fly gassers have been using the straight pump gas and there has been no problems.
I contacted DA a couple of summers ago when the ethanol mix started. They said their engines would have no problems with the fuel. As far as more power and a better running engine with the ethanol mix, I can't really tell a difference. It hasn't hurt performance either. I would contact DA or whoever your engine manuf. is to see what they say. |

Cool Hoosier. I just have a new engine and want to do the right thing....

Re: gasoline/ethanol OK for DA?
Just an off the wall guess here, but could the "extra" power really be because the ethanol leans the mixture slightly, but also burns slightly cooler, thus helping to negate the leaner mixture? Anybody have some ideas?

Re: gasoline/ethanol OK for DA?
10% Ethanol in our gasoline is all the gasoline that is allowed to be sold in CT, so I have been running it for years. Going around the IMAC region states, I often fill up my can in other states when necessary and often, they dont have the ethanol in the fuel, and I notice zero difference between the two, no need to make any adjustments.

I am from Iowa and we do have both here. But I choose to run the Ethanol Blend with ZERO problems as well as to Support our Farmers. Trust me folks if DA says it's ok, It's OK. Also I think it is great to support the people that put food in our mouths not the ones that try to shoot us in the back and crash our jetliners into buildings.

Re: gasoline/ethanol OK for DA?
for what its worth,, on a eppisode of 60 minutes they were talking about gasoline and the ethanol in gasoline. this was to show that the oil companys were ripping the general public off... they said that in the usa, all gas has ethanol in it but, BUT it does not have to have listed on the pump UNLESS it is over this amount. and the amount was 10 %. and that also varried from state to state. but as i stated i dont work for any oil refineries. so i can only state what 60 minutes said. but this should be very easy to find out, as far as your state's requirements. so that was 10% or less they do NOT have to have it listed on the pump. i do know that in the upper states they have more. colder climates or winter they have much more in the fuel to keep it from freezing or what ever it does at below freezing. so i woud say what ever comes out of the pump is good to go. just stay to the reccomended octane and you shouldnt have any problems. this again was gone over when the price of the gas went up . and they were saying about all the different states requirements. the refineries were having to change all the blends for the different states. remember katrina. thats when all this was on the boob tube. they kept saying that we (the united states) need 1 blend for the whole usa and not per state. (this does not mean octane).
