Carden Yak/ RCS Radial

Hey giants crew, my dad and I are in the process of building a Carden Yak to be powered with an RCS 250 5 cylinder radial. This will not be a full build log, but we will post some pictures now and then.

Here are some stats
12 pounds
15 hp
250cc
32x12 to 34x10 2-blade props

Re: Carden Yak/ RCS Radial

I just played with one of those "Moki" Radials today that is going in a FW-190 and I to thought about its use in a Yak/Sukhoi we were runnng the motor and it has all the balls that a DA-150 has but sounds a whole lot cooler. We were spinning a 32/14 3W. I was blown away by its power. I think you are going to be very happy with your combo.

Since you are using a 12# engine up front there, I would look to beef up the firewall and motor box some. Maybe wrap the box in fibreglass?? It wouldn't take a real heavy cloth, maybe 2oz cloth??? Just my opinion there. Looks like it will fit under the hood of that Carden cowl!!!

Lookin good!!! Let us know how the rest of the build goes!!!

yeah, as you can see the motor box is pretty much stock, but the fiberglass is a good idea. yes it fits in the cowl pretty good.

Like Bunky said, beef that motor box up, and you will probably end up with the rudder servos in the tail with all that up-front weight. I was going to use one on my 41% Pitts, but they are too loud for my club! Would have been sweet!! Guess I will have to settle for the 3W157/pipes Also seriously look at baffles, have heard that they get pretty warm

The one I saw wasn't loud at all. In fact it was the sweetest sounding model airplane engine I have ever heard. It sounds just like the real thing. That will be awesome on that Carden!

Re: Carden Yak/ RCS Radial

I have already made mounts in the tail for the rudder servos, I hope by doing that and putting the radio gear toward the back of the hatch I wont have to add any dead weight. When we were talking with Mike at RCS he mentioned that they do overheat faster than the twins so we are putting functional louvers on the cowl and some baffling as well. Hopefully that will be enough.

Re: Carden Yak/ RCS Radial

Hey Barry-

I thought I remembered seeing that they decided the combo didn't give them the performance they wanted - I think they were selling the engine and replacing with a traditional powerplant.

These engines are just something to see and hear but the power to weight isn't up to par with the current gas twins.

Having said that, I would love to see a big biplane with this engine- I have toyed around with drawing up a big Bucker Yungmeister and strapping one of these bad boys on the front- that would be something to see!

Dave

PS- when you coming home for good?
