BoneDoc's 3D Clinic: Snap-to-Hover

Hi guys, welcome to another 3D Clinic with Josh “BoneDoc” Young and my lovely wife, Inn.
In this edition, I’d like to take some time to talk about doing the Snap to Hover. Everybody loves to see one, and it’s definitely a huge crowd pleaser. With a little bit of practice, it’s a relatively safe maneuver to perform, even down low. You do want to practice this at some altitude in the beginning though until you are more familiar with how your particular aircraft responds to the stick input.

The Basic
The basic of a Snap to Hover is to simply do a deep snap under 3D rates. Assuming you’re at 3D rates, here’s what to consider
- Come in at med – low speed
- Pitch the nose up slightly prior to the snap
- Perform the snap with full up elevator, left aileron, left rudder, and ¾ throttle
- Release the control (especially the rudder) at ¾ way through the snap
- “Catch” the snap with good throttle input, and be prepared to control it into a hover

Avoiding Mistakes
In the video we’ll discuss also some basic mistakes people make which include
- Going too slow (not enough energy to properly snap)
- Starting in a stalled position (again not enough energy for the snap)
- Holding on to the controls (especially rudder) too long, causing the aircraft to yaw to the left
- Too much aileron (not deep enough of a snap)
- Too much elevator (snap going too deep, looking like a tight loop)

Start Small
Also if the thought of doing a Snap-to-Hover on your beloved giant scale model scares the hell out of you (as it used to do to me), consider smaller models as they are cheaper to replace, and they will hold up to nose overs better than the giant scale models would.

I hope you enjoy the video. Have fun and FLY LOW!

Josh “BoneDoc” Young

Re: BoneDoc's 3D Clinic: Snap-to-Hover

GOOD ONE! I do snaps on take-off all the time but my closed little mind nevers asks "what do I do next?" Since I'm about to go out to the field, I shall endeavor to raise my planes nose and go into a hover. Might even let the nose fall over backwards and go into a inverted harrier and just motor around the field that way until I figure out what I'll do next! Let's fly!

I have been doing snaps right after take off for years. I have been doing walls to hover right after take off for a long time. I have also been doing snaps to hover but not right after take off. Will give that a try next time out. Thanks!

Thanks Josh. I know my Slick loves the Snap - To - Hover. It usually gets some comments from the peanut gallery too.
