DA-120 powered Yak 55

I did some testing this past weekend for the Yak 55 from OMP and I have come to the conclusion it can handle the DA-120. I was doing full throttle passes on KE with very intense high G turns and no failures so far. Also rolling the plane at full throttle straight and level. Take in mind this plane is already a year and half old and has flown in several Freestyle events and airshows before the DA-120 was ever on there.

With that being said it is probably best not to do this every flight flying this plane hard cause I think no plane can withstand this every flight.

If you have any questions feel free to let me know. Only thing I have notice is the cowl is just a hair too small. I have notice a small crack in the cowl from the spark plug wires hitting when it vibrates. Also you will need spacers to space out the 120 enough to clear the cowl. Put your batteries as far back as you can on the tray and your RX. Rudder servos place them back in the tail end of the plane.

Mike what are you thinking!

That last flight you had on Saturday Donnie and I were noticing how much wing flex that was happening on those ke turns...It was very pronounced....

Kevin did his freestyle show at Ocala IMAC yesterday and put the Yak through the ringer, he flew it harder during practice Sat pm, in the KE push the wings were bending anhedral big time. I really was waiting for the wing to fail and very surprised they didn't break.

EG Aircraft who makes the 100cc Yak-55 and Extra 300 for Ohio Model Products, makes some of the strongest wings I've every seen on a model plane. I crashed the 50cc Yak-55 prototype, dumb thumbs, and after taking out all of the engine and radio equipment was going to put the plane remains in the trash for pick up the next day. I tried to brake the wings in half to put in trash can. I put my feet on the root of the wing and pulled on the tip of wing to brake it. I couldn't break the wings! I had to put the wings on my table saw and cut them in half.

Ha Ha, I have done worse and only had the wings left after the engine went straight back into the wing tube. Some damage to the root leading edge, destroyed the fuse to the stabs and also broke both elevator counter balances. Wings got reused without a problem. I will admit they have the wing build down to a science for strength.

Hopefully my engine will be back from DA for this weekend so I can shoot a small video of the stress I am putting it through. Its a fun bird with the 120 up on the front of her!

One Cylinder blew off. Replace those bolts if you have one of the newer 120s, that is all I am going to say. I have two friends that still have the original bolts and no problem, but I have been flying mine fairly hard.

Besides being strong, whats your opinion on the flight performance of the omp yak compaired to other yaks youve flown. Im thinking about the omp 300 for 749.00 shipped.
