BoneDoc's 3D Clinic - Rolling Harrier Spin / Weeble Wobble

Hey Guys,

"Welcome to another 3D clinic session with BoneDoc, and my lovely wife, Inn." .

If you've perused our sister site, RCG's 3D flying forum, then you probably have seen the 3D Clinic sticky before. My goal when I started the 3D clinic videos was to ultimately build a comprehensive library of 3D maneuvers to help shorten the learning curve for all of us. I definitely learned a lot from Joe McBride's 3DU videos, and hope that this will be a helpful tool in your 3D journey as well.

Of course, thanks to my lovely wife Inn, who not only film my flight, braving the torching Texas heat, but who is also my biggest supporter and fan. Also my two lovely daughters, Josie and Gracie, who always thought of me as their hero no matter how terrible my day has gone. Last but not least, the One I am "NUTS" for (see my avatar), for everything comes from Him, and to Him do I owe all my everything.

Ok, on to the new topic: Rolling Harrier Spin / Weeble Woble
The Rolling Harrier Spin / Weeble Wobble is essentially an extension of the rolling harrier itself. Those that have mastered, or at the very least learned how to keep your plane in the air on a rolling harrier should be able to make the transition to this maneuver. It simply requires a retiming of your stick input.

Different folks have called it different things, but this is what I call them. The difference between the rolling harrier spin and the weeble wobble is the ratio of the aileron to elevator input. Essentially, the rolling harrier spin has a higher aileron:elevator ratio (ie. high rates aileron with high / medium rate elevator). The final result is an aircraft that is flying a corkscrew pattern downline, but maintain its roll axis.

The Weeble Wobble on the other hand, has a lower aileron:elevator input (ie. low / med rate aileron with high rate elevator). The final result is a plane which not only roll slower, but looks like the tail is wobbling in a circular manner as the nose is pointed downward. IMHO, this is the EASIER of the two to learn as things tend to move slower and your thumbs and eyes have more time to adjust to the "odd" timing.

Technique:
The main essential difference between a regular rolling harrier is the rolling harrier spin / weeble wobble is the timing of the input. When I was learning the rolling harrier, I tried to time my up elevator to the point in the roll when the canopy is upright.

For the RHS / WW, try to focus on putting the up elevator when the canopy is facing inside the circle. You first begin with pulling up elevator while starting a downline, and time your up elevator to coincide with the canopy facing inwards. It helps to slow things down, which is why the WW is easier to learn. If you have a sim (which most do), try it with 50% speed to get the feel for the timing. Then as you master it, speed it up.

Recovery:
The simplest recovery is to just stop while the plane is inverted / upright, and fly away. As you get better though, it'd be cool to be able to recover (and continue) with a rolling harrier. You can see in the video that when I am recovering in a rolling harrier I stop putting elevator / rudder input, and then begin again (pull up elevator) when I see the magic cue (you guessed it: canopy pointing to the sky).

Without further ado, here's the video:

Enjoy!
