It all depends on what you like to see in an aerobatic display. Personally, I like superb precision with creativeness and 3D blended all together. If the precision is lacking then it's just ho-hum gyroscopics.

Mike's (Goulian) style is superb....but all of the top guys a great to watch. BTW - he's been flying the Extra 330SC for almost 3 years now. It went from the Castrol Aviator scheme, thru the Sony/Whelen scheme to the Goodyear/Whelen one now. A beautiful plane

Oh....and in the long-run....the baddest are the ones that survive!!!

I wonder why none of the R/C "scale fanatics" ever copy those extremely long spinners?

The 330SC spinner is really long. The Pilot RC 330SC spinner is long that they supply with the kit.

Hmm... is it 6 inch diameter?

The one on my CARF looks like a wart on it's nose.

Yep...I would love to see a spinner like that as well. They basically extend straight forward till just past the prop cutouts and then start tapering to the point. In my opinion they look great and would look the same on our models.

It's not just the 330SC....most, if not all the big Lycomings with Hartzell props run them. Look at Matt's Cap and Sean's Challenger III ....same design spinner.

Tru Turn used to offer an Extra style spinner that was longer and more rounded at the nose. Not sure if they still make them in the bigger sizes though.

Is there anything under the spinner that requires it to be that long, or is long for looks?

I believe it's for clearance of the counterweights which are attached to the each blade, just outside the hub itself. They typically project forward as shown in these pics of a 2-bladed aerobatic Hartzell.

Also, the forward portion of the spinner is supported by a concentric ring the slips over the cylindrical dome of the hub itself.

I've never seen one of the 3-blades without its spinner, so I'm speculating here.

I HAVE!!!! I am making this spinner which is 7 1/4" long with the scale look. I am test flying the prototype this weekend and I plan on selling them in the very near future. It is a 5" diameter spinner. The comparison picture is with a Pete's Model spinner, you can see how short and stubby that spinner is

Interested?

Steve

This dude flies that thing off the hook. Wow. I think he's also an RC pilot if I'm not mistaken. In a weird way he seems like he's flying a full scale like an RC plane. Taking the risks as if he's not in the plane. Rolling harriers. High alpha knife edges. Amazing flying. I've never seen anything like it. I go to Oshkosh ever year to watch the big boys. None of them fly like this. I just hope he stays safe.

Cool, I bet he's good. It's so cool to see a guy who can do RC and full scale equally well. Maybe he's the new breed.
