wrap around pitts style muffler DLE85cc
maybe there might be someone out there that can tell me how to keep a flippen muffler on this engine, pitts style.1st time I used star style washers, red RTV on cyl and muffler and blue lock tite, got about 3 laps around the field and motor quit, This is a new motor less then 3 flights, muffler came lose. 2nd time, washer and lock washer and red rtv and red locktite flew about 10 min engine quit muffler came off lost both screws. 3rd time Nord Lock washers red rtv and of course new bolts and rtv on the threads of the bolt, good for about 10 min. engine quit, I am getting dam good with dead stick landings. 4th time all new bolts again checked prop and hub balance/perfect.
red rtv on cyl/muffler, this time vibratite , lasted about 3 flights ya who I thought and went up a 4th time and muffler came off again but this time both bolts gone and one came out the other broke off half way in the cyl. and beat the hell out of the muffler and ob longed the bolt hole. Took cyl. to machine shop and the guy told me being a harden bolt what might happen is when he try's and drills it out it might split the side well he got a little hole in it almost big enough to get his ez out in there but had to go one step bigger, well that did it split the side out. So Now NEW ENGINE and JUNK CYL. AND MUFFLER. I have 6 DLE engines 4 DA engines and a dozen or so after market china engines, I have never ever had a problem with mufflers like this 85cc. DLE of course isn't going to help me they tell me I did something wrong, well i have been flying for over 30+ years and been flying longer then they have been in business, I have done everything but JB weld the dang bolts in, Now i have to buy a new cyl. 150.00 and new muffler 125.00 so I am thinking to get longer bolts with a hex head and a flat washer and have it on the outside of the muffler then drill a hole in each head and safety wire them. If any of you have any other ideas please feel free to chime in. |

I have that engine with the wrap around pits muffler also. I use Belleville spring lock washers, but I also remove the gasket and place a thin film of Permatex form a gasket, and I use the Permatex to place a film around the threads of the bolts. I have never had a muffler come loose with this method.

I'm in sort of the same boat as you only my nemesis is a DLE61. It has a Jtec pitts on it and the bolts will not stay tight. I originally put it on with copper rtv and Nord-lock washers just like all my others with which I have no trouble. Next I put 5mm longer bolts in to catch all the threads in the head and used high temp thread lock and they still back out. I'm now going to additionally safety wire them. I wish you luck.

but it just cost me 250.00 for a new cyl and muffler, that is the part that sucks. |

I think I speak for many, Mufflers with a 3 point contact don't come loose.
I fought and fought until I either tossed the pitts in the garbage or made a strap or bought one with it. We tried blue, red, and green Loctite with safety wire to no avail. I love the sound of them but without the strap I move on. IMO |

https://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-washers/=186prjv The Permatex, shown as well, will not let go under the stress or vibration. All the silicon, acrylic, etc, does not hold anywhere near as well. |

Guess I am lucky I have 2 DLE-61s one with a Bisson wrap around the other with a Jtec, I don't have any problems with them coming loose. I have a strap on both using red prematex with red locktite on the bolts. I let them sit for 3 days after installation before cranking the engines up.--Smitty

From day one, I have not used the anti vibration mount on my 85. It runs very smooth without it.

Coming from the large scale RC car world, I know that Nord-Lock washers work best with a softer bolt like 8.8 steel so that the washers has a better chance to bite the bolt head. They also require a solid gasket like a copper gasket or no gasket, only sealant. And I think that an aluminium muffler could be too soft for the Nord-Lock to work it's wonder depending on the alloy used since you have to tighten them pretty good before they really bite the bolt head.
Something I haven't seen mentioned yet is to re-tighten the bolts while the engine is at operating temperature. |

Jtec installation instructions work pretty well for their products. Some mufflers can be damaged by over tightening the bolts then they won't stay tight no matter how they are installed.
