To Baffle or Not to Baffle - That is the question

Hey All,

I got a little nutty at the end of last season.....and strapped a Webra 1.20 pumped onto my Hanger 9 Showtime 4D. I had too much fun blowing the trim off the plane...and I never got around to fitting up a new cowl. Well I finally did it and surprisingly enough...it fits pretty well. Now the question is this. With the head partially exposed out of the side......and the rest of the cyl being directly behind one of the intakes on the front....is there a need to baffle this engine or do you think it will be ok this way? I plan on leaving the lower opening open on the front....but the one opposite of the head I plan on closing off.

Thoughts....Comments?

Neo

P.S. I've blown a good portion of the trim off the plane and knocked the stabs loose during high speed maneuvers. But man oh man is it fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glow engines use the fuel to help keep them cool. No need to baffle it.

DO NOT BAFFLE, the engine needs to be a little hot, this is how it works, if you will baffle the engine it will be too cold and it will cause allot of trouble in the air.

From the pictures there is one thing you need to do, you need the 1:2 ratio between the air inlet hols and the the one that let the air go out, that way you could have a circulation of air in the cowl and the engine will stay cool enough.(pure physices)
So the hole where the muffler is, needs to be bigger.

but your engine head is located out side the cowl and its more than enough.

Well, I would have to agree with the TAZ--physics. Also it will prevent the engine from prematurely leaning itself because of the hot thin air that is trapped in the cowl. My 160 fit snuggly inside the cowl of the 4D. The cylinder head was right behind one of the entry holes. I had direct air to the engine. But I did not have air flow. I ended up enlarging the bottom of the cowl. I also had to add tail weight. I was able to clock my D at 99mph. Fluttering like CRRRRAAzy.
