JR 12X upgraded to DSMX
Hey guys,
Just got my 12X back from Horizon with the upgrade and thought I might pass on what I've learned as the radio comes back from the service center without any additional documentation. I did some experimenting with it using both DSM2 and DSMX rx's and I had to get one of the Horizon techs to track down the other information since he didn't know when I called, but he tracked it down and let me know within a couple of hours. They put a new label on the top of the face where the little blue transmit light is located, indicating it's DSMX. On the display screen, there's a little DSMX emblem in the upper right hand corner of the display. That always says "DSMX" whether it's bound to a DSM2 rx for that particular model or DSMX, so basically there's no way to tell which rx type it's bound to like there is with the DX8 radios. Also, the DX8 radios can be forced to use DSM2 with a DSMX rx if you want to use the power brownout indication, it still works on DSM2 rx's or DSM2 mode on DSMX rx's, but unlike the DX8, you cannot force the updated 12X to DSM2 mode if the model has a DSMX rx. There are a couple of ways to tell though; if it's in DSM2 mode, it takes the usual 3 seconds or so from when you turn it on (while it's picking the two frequencies) to when it starts transmitting as evidenced by when the little blue RF light comes on. You'll also see the slight (.2) voltage increase when it goes from bootup to transmit. When it's in DSMX mode, it turns on and starts transmitting instantly as the little blue light comes on as you turn on the radio. There's also no time lag between switching on and starting to transmit. The link time with a DSMX rx is almost instant as well where the DSM2 mode rx's will still take that 3 to 5 seconds to link. I'm not sure about what goes on with the other model radios when you upgrade, but I suspect it will be similar since there were no other changes I could see to the programming features and even though I backed up all my models, the data is still there and the couple of models I've checked so far seem to be working as expected. |

Good info Zeeb I'm curious how much difference there is going to be with the 11X

Re: JR 12X upgraded to DSMX
Just sent mine in today...good to hear the review on things. I would have figured that Horizon/JR/whoever that programmed the changes would have made the display say weather it is bound to dsm2 or dsmx. I have a new 11x on order (native dsmx) and will see how it compares to the 12x when I get it back.

Re: JR 12X upgraded to DSMX
No it says JR 12X DSM 2.4GHz and AFAIK, that's all the JR radios have ever said; DSM, but I can't remember what the X9303 said. The Spektrum radios always said DSM2 and the new DX8 I just got still has the "DSM2" silkscreen, but it has an indication on the display as to which one it's running.
