I was just joking around about testing the water.
you might have a point about the 70 fitting in most cowls. but at 10-3/4" from plug caps the only ones that will fit will be the new super size heavy 50cc planes from EF and 3DHS.
I still like light planes with big engines and the EF comes out around 20lbs. witch I think a 60 is not enough.but the 70 twin is said to spin a 24-8 at 7200-7300 on stock mufflers.that would be a nice set up for the EF.

Ya the EF 91 Extra is gonna see a lot of DA 70s I believe. 91 Yak a little smaller fuse/cowl and lighter so the 60 gonna be great for that bird.

The cowl is smaller on the yak than the extra? I wouldn't have thought that.

Seen a EF 91 inch Extra at 5000ft and the 60 flew it just fine.

Never would have thought the yak cowl would have been smaller than the extra. Figured the 70 would have been perfect for the yak. I might be wrong but thought 3dhs new 92" planes cowls where smaller than EF

I dunno... I just got it from Daniel that 60 is gonna be a excellent match for the Yak. He also said that the Yak fuse is smaller then the extra thus lighter and I just kinda figured that the cowl would be the same but dont take me for positive on that...

Not sure I just asked Daniel a little about it since I was considering selling my 91 Extra frame and getting the 91 Yak which I think was complete stupidity on my part because the 91 Extra just flies awesome. If I get the Yak Im keeping the Extra...

I asked Chris Hinson about the cowl size on the Yak at Nall and he said they were very close to each other.

DA-60 / DA-70

I'm planning on running a DA-70 in my 2.3m CARF-Models Edge 540. Thing is the build manual is based on running a DA-60 in this plane. What I need to know is what the weight difference is between the DA-60 and the DA-70. I know I can call DA for this info but I just thought I would check here first. Thanks!

Bare engine weights from DA.

3.1 lbs for the 60.

3.55 lbs for the 70. Also remember the 70 has two mufflers instead of one.

Da 70 mufflers (pair) 7.5 oz.

I just weighed a MTW can with header for the 60cc class motor and it was 14.6 oz. I came up with about 12oz with a header and proflow each for the 30cc class so you are looking at 24oz to get sound reduction on the 70 for those of us poor souls that have to care about such things. I know companies are working on canister solutions for the 70 that will probably be a little less weight.

At the moment you are at a 1lb disadvantage compared to the 60, so you have to ask if that is worth the extra power or not in a sound sensitive situation.

Use pipes instead of cans, the trade off would then be nil.

Yes, ES pipes would be the way to go and lighter, but the cost factor goes through the roof. Another issue that the increased performance will take the prop tip speed to a level that again brings up the noise issue. As soon as you say use a three blade, you loose much of that power gain in the efficiency loss in that prop.
