Re: PAU 30% Sukhoi Su-26m Build and Fly

Hi Guys,

Yes 3" standoffs are used for the DA-50. Here is the trusty ole new DA I am installing on mine. The firewall is pre marked with the trust-line and offset centerline. You would need to draw a line over the offset "+" vertically and horizontally.

Take the template located on the last page of the manual and cut it out. Tape the template to the firewall matching up the drawn lines. Mark, drill, and install the motor...pretty straight forward.

Special note: If using a Pitts muffler you may want to twist the angle of the motor a degree or two so that the exhaust stacks exit the bottom of the cowl center of the cuts you will need to make in the cowl for the stacks. That will make for a very clean installation.

Ken

Just a note, the method shown above is awesome, Ive done the hold it in place, mark the stand offs, put the fuse vertical, blah blah blah methods, this works, and is done in <5 minutes.

That method does work very well! I prefer to sacrafice Christmas party plates, but paper works well too.

Sounds great. I plan on using a DL-50 or BME-58. I had a DA-50 once. Nice motor. DA service is the best. Just trying something different.
Can't wait to see the videos.

I'm leaning toward the DL-50 as well.

I'd like to try my 3W55 though and break it in on this plane so its ready to go for the P-47. I'm going to take some measurements today to see if it will fit without too many mods.

Re: PAU 30% Sukhoi Su-26m Build and Fly

Just for some comparisons.....

I measured from firewall to hub on Ryans with the MT-57 and it was 7in. I measured from firewall to cowl and it was the same.

I measured Johns on the DA50 and it was 7 in to hub and 6.5 to cowl.

I measured my 3W55 that is mounted on my P-47 and with the standoffs I have on it......from firewall to hub was 6.75in. This means that for the 3W55 to fit on the Su-26 you will have to cut a hole in the motorbox for the carb to fit through (I figured this would be the case for the 3W55). The carb on the 3W55 sits at least 1-2 inches into the fuse on the P-47 so I don't think there is enough wiggle room on the Sukhoi to make it work without cutting. I will be doing this on mine when I get the chance to head over and pick up the plane.

I plan to run 2 2400 LION's with 6V regs for the RX and 1 2400 LION for the ignition (no reg).

For servos...

-8611a on rudder
-821 on throttle
-Not sure on the Elev or ailerons yet, but maybe 2721's on the Elev and 8321 on the aileron, Gotta look what I got laying around first.
-Electro Dynamic Ignition Kill----no Ryan prop breaks for me!
-Spektrum AR9000 with 2 satellites
-some kind of PAU prop.....22x10 or 23 something.

Ken- let me know when the next shipment gets in........maybe this weekend I can swing up there?

Sam, my cowl measurement should be 6.5. I have about a 1/2" gap from cowl to prop hub, just like John's. There is room to slide the cowl back about an inch to accomodate a shorter or heavier engine for balance purposes.

I'm not sure what PAU is going to recommend for servo size on this plane but I would recommend at least 120 oz/in for the elevators and ailerons. Due to the draggy nature of this plane, if you are choosing between a 22x10 and 23x8, I would recommend the 23x8. That's what is on my plane and I get lots of thrust with decent flying speed. John's 22x8 was no slouch either though.

Maybe my numbers are slightly off but I do know that John had a larger gap (by 1/2in) from the edge of the cowl to the hub then you did.

Thanks for the numbers on the servo reqs. If that is the case I'll probably just "borrow" the 8411's from the ultimate until I can get some new servos for it since I'm recovering it anyway.

As for the prop.....3W suggests at least a 22x10 for break-in. I'll most likely go with the 23x8 then. My motor also already has a pitts style muffler on it.

It's likely it's just where John decided to place the cowl. There is a bit of wiggle room.

I agree Ken. Looking at the full scale the hub is further out giving the prop more clearance from the cowl. Its the same on Yak's also. I plan to use my pics/measurement from my previous SU-26 to get the desired clearance for my liking. I was hoping by some chance that I wouldn't have to cut the motor box but the 3W carb sits so far back that it appears I can't get away with that.

Ask John what servos he used, L.O.L. ( I think any 30% size will work fine).
