I've been restoring this vintage (1985) Tiger Tail III pattern ship and hope to fly in the Ballistic Pattern Association meet in Huntsville, AL this August.

Got a Dalton Extra 300 MEL about 80% finished as well.

Re: Winter Project Update!

I am actually stooping to building a KIT. . for the first time in about 7 years.

I'll be doing a build thread starting this week. It's a Delta Vortex, from BTE. Here's the URL: http://www.btemodels.com/vortex.html

I'm bashing the kit a bit. . adding retracts .. going to a single fin configuration and full length ailerons, and using Electric power with a 6S 4000ma pack for power.

Here's the building board. . .so seldom used I had to clear off the clutter so I could lay things out:

Re: Winter Project Update!

Started building a trailer in November and haven't had much time to work on it but lately I've been able to work on it during the weekends due to weather and I'm hoping to have it finished by the end of April. Trailer is a 6x12

Here are some pictures I took yesterday

I'm making the gear removable, in a subassembly, so I ditch it if I want. But the all-up weight of the retracts is less than 14 ounces, and on a plane that has this much wing area it's negligible. I kind of have to have LG on the plane, though, because it's almost impossible to get an electric to stop the propeller in a horizontal position for landings. Maybe I could rig up a servo with a Rod that would move into the prop arc near the hub and stop it from rotating, for landings.

I did some weight comparisons of components:

OS 91 w/muffler, tank, 1/2 load of fuel, mount, and throttle servo...38-40 ounces + beefier airframe for the glo motor.

Turnigy C6065-400 w/speed control and 4000ma 6s1p pack...34-35 ounces

Fixed Gear versus Retracts. . .11 ounces versus 14

So the weight differences are miniscule, especially on a plane with almost 1400 inches of wing. at 7 lbs that's 16 ounces/foot of loading. . very low.

I am new to the giants, I am scratch building a short solent 480 sea plane from ivans plans .It will have 4-480- brushed motors and 4 gear boxes with 4-4 bladed props ,99in wing span the fuse is about 6 feet long, I will use2- 3 cell 3200 lipos . I enjoy flying off water and i see a lot of cubs on floats so i wanted some thing a little different to fly. I have the fuse done and i am cutting all the wing ribs now and soon i will start framing the wing. I think ivans solent came in at 124 ounces with the batteries ,I am hoping to come close to his weight .The solent was a 35 passenger sea plane and looks great in the air. joe
