Sorry if you have answered this before, when you are deciding on your weight goals and the powerplant necessary to fly the airplane are you crunching numbers to give you the answer? If not, are you basing your "assumptions" on experience and overall judgement of what does and does not need to be in the airplane? I would guess that you do a combination of both, but was curious how your thoughts flow from your head to the completed airframe.

Keep up the good work buddy!!

I do crunch some numbers, but I really apply what I have learned over the years.

A question from a new and very inspired viewer: In making the wings, rudder and elevator, which is lighter and stronger, foam covered with balsa like this on your project or balsa ribs?

Allen
I think if one, or the other is built correctly, they will both be strong enough to get the job done for you.

I am about sure that a built up wing can come in lighter, but the sheeted method is easier and faster to complete for most builders.

I am sure that the DL 222 is a very good powerplant, and I am not knocking it in no means, however Dave Johnson and his staff have always gone beyond the call to take care of me, so I would not think of putting anything other than a DA in this airplane.

Here are a couple more pics of the cowling master, it is just about ready to make the LUB. (Lay up block) I also included a pic of a 35% Laser cowling I did a couple of years ago as a reference of size.

i just talked with the guys at TMB the other day about the DLE 222. i'm sure it will be a good powerplant when it is perfected but it is my understanding that there is still some final R&D going on and it will be a little while til it's next "release".

Holy SHIIIIIIIIIZ, I took two evenings just to read this thread. AAAAAmazing work again. I was bummed when the 80% went on the back burner but with this bird being done I just dont care anymore. I can afford a 50%+ plane now. I have a Hemple Edge siting in my trailer and the only thing stoping it from leaving th ground is the cost of the engine. Problem solved. Damn incredible work..OK, save some pennies buy a Aerotech kit and BAM instant BADASS bird.

Thanks for sharing

I second that, I enjoy my DA motors.

Well sensei after you get this one flying do think you will put a DA-200 on it?

Funny you should ask, I have been talking to Dave at DA about the 200 for a couple of weeks now.

I spoke with Matt about this topic last night, and have decided to get the 200 next week. Matt and Kevin are both building this bird as we speak, and Matt is going to demo his 55 % with the DA-170, so it looks like it will be the 200 for mine, it will be a small setback on time, but I think it will be a good combo and worth the added effort.

That's great to know that we'll get the first 2 prototypes with both the DA 170 and DA 200 to compare test results.

sweet that ought to be cool. I can't wait to hear my Da-170 run with the Re3's in my Dalton. One thing is forsure is that Da-200 is one smooooooth running motor. Am glad they finally released it. You should put Re2's on it like Quique did.

Well keep up the good work

Bob,

Since you're farther along in your build (I presume), why not have Kevin / Matt build theirs with the 200? That seems like a more expedient option to me.

It is only a day or two set back, and like I said earlier, DA is good to me...

Re: Ultra Light 55% Extra 260

So long as one gets built soon in the 170. i have been seriously thinking about this bird, but for me it would only be viable in the 170 with re-3's.
This thread has been gearing up for the 170 for a long time now so it's a bit sad to see the 200 going in now, but i fully understand why Bob! good luck mate!
The 170 on RE-3's is a much cheaper option than the 200 on x 4 re-2's! plus quite a bit lighter!
