Bill... You are the MAN!!! Nice save and some great FLYING!!!!

It's one thing to fly the mess out of a plane with both wings, but to fly the mess out of a plane with one wing.............................................. ..........................................

Toro,

I believe that your analysis of the situation is probably the most correct.

This would explain the tear-out on the bottom of the wing panel.

I always put at least my retaining pins in also before flying. Whenever there is a human involved in the equation there will always be a margin of error.

Sure all Bill will need is a new wing and maybe prop. I might have a spare right wing but its in the Red scheme.

At least in this case we know what happened. We should learn a lesson from this, to use the right screws and to practice flying with one wing panel, just in case.
I think a new word should be added to the Giant Jargon, Hemple landing

Holy Friggin' Crap!! That was an awesome save! When someone said before fly it 'til it hits the ground I've been in a situation like that. Nothing near Bill's save but my 2.3m Comp-Arf locked out on me and went into the trees. I knew how it went in and luckily it came out of lockout and my input was correct and she came back out. Many people at the Peeble's IMAC last year remember . . .

I second that. Hemple landing should be Giant Jargon.

Re: Here is a Bill Hemple clip

Here's the email I got from Bill when I asked him what happened.

I believe the screw came off the wing panel inside the fuse. I wrote aresponse to the RCU forum and explained that it was my fault and not adesign issue. Then, the forum disappeared.

BH

So for all those people who are certain it was a wing failure, it was not. The whole problem started when the wing slid out of the fuse. Anyone who has had that happen knows that all sorts of damage can occur secondarily, but that is a symptom of the problem, not the cause.
