checking servo amp draw w/eflite power meter

Hey all

I have an eflite power meternal from back when I was in electrics. I would like to test the amps each of my servos are pulling on my 40% at neutral. Would I just hook the battery up to meter and plug other end into servo and see what amps are or do I need to go through receiver?

Thx

I used one once for servo load and found it great for electric setups but not fine enough for measuring servo amp draw. I tried both ways.

Quad current meter

I have the meter from Fromeco: works great. Up to 4 servos at once.

Essential tool!
Have had mine for a couple years now. Makes setting up multiple servo's per surface much easier and more accurate than listening for the buzz.

What brand/model number servos are you trying to match.

I am running savox 1230 and 1231. The main reason I was looking at the meter is I feel like the plane is eating up more mah then it should so I was going to check the amp draw of each servo to see if one or two are off.

I was making sure you were not using the newer brushless servos. I don't believe those ones are. I have found an amp meter to not be all that usefull with brushless servos that I have.

Fine enough for setting up low power brushless servos?

I'm thinking about doing a clamp on current probe with two servo power wires going in opposite directions (to measure the difference in current) for the brushless, but maybe this is sensitive enough?

perfectly suited for this task. It reads to the thousandth of an amp.
Its a dual range. If the amperage is over 1 amp, then it reads to the hundredth of an amp. ie, 1.42amps (someone double check me here but I am pretty sure it reads two digits to the right of the decimal, when the amperage is over 1 amp.)

if the amperage is under 1 amp, then it reads to the thousandth of an amp. ie, 882mAh

before I purchased one of these, I used the buzzing method. Found that through most of the range, I had the servo throws nailed!, but at the extreme ends, one servo was pulling over 5 amps, and the other was pulling mAh's.

Was able to fine tune aileron and rudder servo throws to match through many different points on a curve using the Quad meter.

Here is an example linked from Fromeco's site.

RC Helicopter cyclic tester (1 min 47 sec)

I will have to try and up load the video I made but it shows how little current brushless servos draw under load. With 1 lb of force on the arm it was showing 176 milli amps of current. Idle it was 36 or 26. Something in that area. Matching up my ganged rudder servos proved to be useless using g the fromeco quad meter. I ended up removing one ball link and matched up the hole through the whole range of motion. The quad meter was not even close. It works perfect on core less servos though.
