Re: MT 70 twin, smooth, light powerful 50cc upgrade

Wow Tomy, that Votec is beautiful! I love the sound of twins too.

Will MT Engines USA be importing this plane as well? I know they have a Yak 55 and Steinbach already. I would love to get one.

Re: MT 70 twin, smooth, light powerful 50cc upgrade

I have over three gallons thru the engine now and had the engine in my 50cc Aeroworks Extra 300 at the Joe Noll. 6700 rpm with a Zoar 23x8 laminated on the stock mufflers. The "s" slant plug version fits completely in the cowl. With the engine tuned 50 rpm or so rich the left plug fouled in less than three gallons but the right plug was light chocolate brown. The left 1/4-32 plug also had no rcexl markings and shows signs of arcing across the ceramic. Tomy recommended I check the plug gap. Both plugs are gapped the same and I have since replaced them with $17.00 American made Rim Fire plugs. The front bearing seals on mine leaks grease and oil.

Tomy is sending replacement plugs and the straight plug cylinders for testing.

Tomy says they are bearings from Japan. After this flying season I'll replace them.

So if one were to have leaking bearings on their MT 70, would that be something that could be handled by the warranty? I love the concept and performance of the twin but don't want to have to replace bearings myself or shell out $$ after a season. One of these would be awesome in a 3DHS 89" Slick!

Right on both accounts, it would be covered under warranty, it would be fantastic in a 3DHS Slick 540, and the bearings are NTN from Japan.

What would cause the seals to leak? Mine is not the only one to have this issue. I have not run the engine lean, it is fully baffled and the cowl has a chin scoop to aid cooling. Just a bad batch? Who makes the best bearings for our model engine use? Fafnir? Timken?

Lots of bearing places to choose from, I've used these guys now and then http://www.vxb.com/.
Since you have a seal failing you should check for play in the crank. And replace the bearings as soon as possible if there is any. No sense tearing something up. Sure you could get warranty work done but doing your own you can spec. a higher grade bearing. For the price you paid for the engine you are still way ahead evan if you buy your own bearings.
Some times seals will leak a bit as they seat and might quit leaking after a while. So if the crank is tight give it a bit more time before doing surgery.
On the other hand, if I knew others are having bearing issues then I'd most definetly do my own bearing replacment, warranty will only get you another set of crappy bearings.

Re: MT 70 twin, smooth, light powerful 50cc upgrade

Japanese NTN bearings are some of the best, SKF, Fafnir, Timken, Boca are all excellent. If the bearings were leaking from the first run it's usually a damaged seal on installation. I have seen them leak a very small amount when new then stop after a handful of runs. Neither of the 2 I've run are leaking. If they're leaking fuel/oil mix your loosing some performance and the bearings aren't getting the lube they are designed for, in that case I'd change them now before they hurt something else.

One thing that nobody understand about good quility bearing is that they are rated at 180 Deg F, I can not find a bearing rated at a higher temp without paying mega bucks for it, I am really supprized that more of them do not fail, It seems that bearings with the gray seals hold up better.

best bearings I've used are Japanese NSK brand with brown seals..Used in G26s, have not seen a leaky one...There is no front seal on the G26, just the bearing....
3W used these, went to a different color seal on the inside front bearing, went back to brown seals....If the engine has two front bearings it would be good to use sealed bearing on both....twice the protection from a leak...3W engines have NO open bearings, all 3 are sealed...

looks like a really good motor if the bearing problem can be fixed. anyone run this motor on a tuned pipe or canister with some results? im thinking a y header do you can use one tuned pipe or canister instead of two and save some weight

I'm not sure it's an across the board bearing problem. I know of two engines with leaky seals and two that don't (Jody's). Mine was slinging grease from the get go. Tomy said both front bearings are sealed so it's blowing threw four seals.

Jody, Will you do the warranty replacement of the bearings for this engine I bought from MTEngines USA? And do you have parts now?
